Porsche is Reintroducing Gas Power in the Upcoming 718 | Carscoops

Porsche's 718 sports cars are set to receive a higher-end internal combustion engine (ICE) variant, alongside the upcoming electric Boxster and Cayman models, which are slated to launch in 2026. Originally designed solely as electric vehicles (EVs), the new combustion versions, likely to be labeled as RS models, are planned for a later release.

The automaker has previously made missteps, like the attempt to replace the iconic 911 with the 928, and more recently, the decision to exclude combustion engines from the 718 series. However, Porsche has wisely reversed both decisions, confirming that the next generation of Boxster and Cayman will now include an ICE option available to only a select group of buyers.

This strategic change was disclosed during an investor call, where CEO Oliver Blume acknowledged a slowdown in the EV market, prompting the company to adjust its earlier electric-centric strategy. Consequently, Porsche is planning to introduce additional combustion models, some identified as "highly emotional" variants that will sit at the top of the 718 lineup.

While specific details remain sparse, it's plausible that models like the Cayman GT4, GT4 RS, and 718 Spyder will continue to utilize six-cylinder petrol engines. The standard 718 models are set to retain the single and dual-motor electric drivetrains developed specifically for these EVs.

However, transitioning the electric platform to accommodate an ICE is not a quick fix. The electric 718 models are anticipated to debut in 2026, but we’ll need to wait for a later phase of the model cycle to see the combustion-powered flagship versions.

Porsche is likely to market these combustion models as the ideal choice for enthusiasts, and they are expected to be the priciest options available. While they may excel on the track, earlier reports indicated challenges in matching the handling capabilities of the current ICE models with the new EV prototypes. Nevertheless, the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive EVs are expected to outperform these combustion models in straight-line speed.

At the same time, Porsche has also reversed its plans for an all-electric Macan SUV, deciding instead to introduce a new range with ICE and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options before the decade's end. Additionally, the flagship SUV, known by the code K1, which was initially intended to be fully electric, will now offer a mix of combustion and hybrid engines instead of a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) version.
