In July, Jeep hinted strongly at the introduction of a V8-powered Gladiator 392. This is thrilling news for both V8 and midsize pickup fans, but it raised a question: what happened to the 4xe plug-in hybrid that Stellantis CEO Anthony Filosa promised would debut this year? It seems we now have our answer: Automotive News has confirmed that the project has been scrapped.

We’d like to be shocked by this, but the signs have been evident since Stellantis parted ways with Carlos Tavares and his anti-V8 stance. Tavares later admitted he could have managed things differently at the multinational automaker, but what’s done is done. His electrification strategy across brands left the U.S. divisions struggling to introduce new models in a timely manner, with disappointing results.

However, since Filosa assumed leadership in 2024, every U.S. brand has been making adjustments. Prices have decreased, internal combustion engine options are making a comeback, and plans for electric vehicles are being discarded—the Gladiator 4xe was just collateral damage.

Perhaps one day soon, the industry will reconsider a conventional plug-in hybrid pickup in the U.S., but for now, it remains a distant possibility. At least Ram’s range-extended EV is still in development… for now. Ostensibly, Jeep maintains its commitment to launch the electrified Recon later this year, which we will continue to monitor closely.

“The Jeep Gladiator maintains its rugged design and authentic style into 2026 while incorporating impressive new features straight from the factory. It will remain the only open-air pickup truck in the industry, merging legendary Jeep 4x4 capabilities with outstanding everyday practicality,” stated Amy Delcamp, Director of Jeep Brand Communications, in response to an email inquiry.

“As customer preferences for battery-electric trucks shift, Stellantis is reevaluating its product strategy and will no longer offer an electrified Gladiator version within the Jeep lineup,” she added. “The Jeep brand has already begun reallocating funds to ensure the long-term growth of the Jeep Gladiator, aiming to introduce more factory features, customization options, and additional powertrain choices based on customer demand in the near future.”

On the subject of future plans, we are uncertain if this decision will affect the Wrangler or Grand Cherokee 4xe models; should Jeep provide any insights, we will update this story.
