Audi Shelves Its Most Exciting EV Wagon Due to Lack of Interest in Electric Performance Vehicles | Carscoops

The anticipated performance EV dreams have taken a setback as the long-awaited RS6 E-tron has been canceled without ever being unveiled.

Insider sources reveal that Audi has abandoned its plans for the fully electric RS6 E-tron.

This Avant model was intended to function as the electric counterpart to the next-gen hybrid RS6.

Reportedly, weak demand for performance EVs contributed to Audi's decision.

Audi had initially aimed to broaden the RS6 range with two different options: a plug-in hybrid based on the latest A6 and a fully electric version stemming from the A6 E-tron. However, a recent report indicates that the high-performance EV has been discreetly shelved despite earlier sightings of camouflaged prototypes.

Last year, spy photographers managed to capture aggressive-looking A6 E-tron test vehicles in both Sportback and Avant styles. Their larger front bumper intakes and noticeable diffusers strongly suggested an RS6 E-tron was in development. Now, it seems those expectations have diminished.

Citing insiders from Audi, Top Gear reports that the RS6 E-tron project has been scrapped. The choice is attributed to a lack of demand for high-performance EVs. This means the current S6 E-tron remains the most potent variant in the lineup, offering up to 543 hp (405 kW / 551 PS) via its dual electric motors. Utilizing the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) co-developed with Porsche, it features a 100 kWh battery pack that allows for a range between 640 and 670 km (398–416 miles).

For enthusiasts who desire more sound and raw character from their RS6, there is still encouraging news. Audi is proceeding with the next-generation RS6 Avant, a long-time competitor of BMW’s M5 Touring. It will sport an RS-specific body kit featuring large intakes, wide fenders, and the signature dual oval exhaust tips protruding from the rear bumper.

The new RS6 is anticipated to come equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, promising enhanced performance relative to its predecessor. Early reports hinted it would adopt a twin-turbo V6 as a base, but there is a possibility it will retain the V8 engine to distinguish it from the smaller RS5 Avant that is also in development.

While some may mourn the absence of an all-electric RS6, the plug-in hybrid represents a compromise that blends supercar-level performance with practical everyday use and a degree of zero-emission capability. In today's marketplace, this might be the more appealing option.
