Report Indicates New Land Cruiser EV and RAV4 EV Will Be Manufactured in the US | Carscoops
Toyota is reorganizing its U.S. production by halting Lexus ES manufacturing to accommodate two new three-row electric SUVs.
The Kentucky plant will produce both electric SUVs, with one likely resembling the Land Cruiser and the other based on the RAV4, intended for Toyota's popular crossover segment.
The automotive sector is constantly evolving, and Toyota's latest update reflects this dynamic. The Japanese carmaker has decided to relocate production of the next Lexus ES back to Japan. In contrast, production will commence for two new electric SUVs, one of which is expected to be named after the Land Cruiser, right here in Kentucky.
This decision isn't entirely surprising, as Toyota has been hinting at an electric Land Cruiser for several years. Additionally, sedan sales are diminishing in the U.S., while the popularity of crossovers and SUVs remains strong. By concentrating on the production and sale of SUVs rather than sedans, Toyota can also circumvent tariffs on its most sought-after models.
Electric SUVs Based on Familiar Names
Sources familiar with the situation told Reuters that these upcoming EVs "will be based on the Land Cruiser and RAV4." The wording suggests that they may be derived from those models, but it’s also possible they could just share the names, even if the underlying vehicles vary.
The Land Cruiser Se concept, unveiled in 2023, aligns with an electrified version of the well-known off-roader. Designed as a sleek, three-row EV, it complements the retro-style two-row Land Cruiser currently available in the U.S. and the larger 300 series model sold in international markets.
Another potential candidate for the Land Cruiser name is the rumored compact SUV often referred to as the FJ Cruiser, although its size appears unsuitable for a three-row configuration. However, reports indicate it may be available with both electric and hybrid options. Toyota teased a shadowy image of this model a couple of years ago and recently filed patent images believed to represent the production version.
RAV4 EV's Significance
The second model, described as a three-row electric SUV based on the RAV4, could play a crucial role in the company’s strategy. The RAV4 is currently America's third-best-selling vehicle this year. A family-sized electric SUV that maintains the RAV4 branding could significantly enhance Toyota's electric lineup, especially in light of the bZ4X not meeting expectations. If an electric RAV4 can achieve popularity similar to its gasoline counterpart, it will mark a significant success for the brand.
Changes in Lexus Production
Meanwhile, Toyota will move the production of the next-generation Lexus ES back to Japan, a shift the company hinted at in 2021. While it's unclear if this decision is sound in light of existing tariffs, it may reflect Toyota's assessment of the market and the ongoing decline in sedan sales. Production of the Lexus TX will remain in Indiana, where the factory is also expected to boost production of the Grand Highlander.
