Three years ago, Mercedes-Benz announced its intentions to transition entirely to electric vehicles by the end of the decade, contingent on market conditions. However, like many other manufacturers, it has since revised that strategy. Recently, at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, the company confirmed that its flagship V12 engine will continue to be produced well into the 2030s.

This information comes from Autocar, and while it is positive news, the specifics of how Mercedes plans to manage this in light of upcoming emissions regulations remain vague. When asked about the engine's compliance with Euro 7 standards, CEO Thomas Schäfer stated, “I will not say more, but it is coming.”

It's likely that these V12 engines will be unavailable in regions where they are banned, while still being offered in other markets. Schäfer mentioned that the automaker must adhere to Europe’s combustion engine ban scheduled for 2035. “However, there are other markets at the moment [such as the Middle East and China] where I do not anticipate such regulations being implemented,” he said, as reported by Autocar. “Therefore, we could still sell these engines in those regions as long as there is customer demand.”

Currently, the sole Mercedes-branded vehicle featuring one of its V12 engines is the Maybach S680, which uses the 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged M279; the company continues to manufacture V12s for Pagani as well. Additionally, Mercedes is reintroducing straight-sixes and V8s, as Schäfer emphasized the upcoming launch of a high-performance eight-cylinder engine compliant with Euro 7 for AMG vehicles, intended to replace the less popular four-cylinder hybrid system.
