VinFast Owner Claims Their EV Took Control of the Steering and Almost Collided with a Wall | Carscoops
Owners report that the VinFast VF 8 has unexpectedly jerked them toward walls. The NHTSA and VinFast have now confirmed a complete recall.
Recently, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received 14 complaints in 2024 regarding the VF 8's Lane Assist steering acting erratically. Drivers have stated that the electric vehicle veered toward walls, drifted between lanes, and resisted attempts to regain control.
A free software update is scheduled to begin on October 31, 2025, to correct the Lane Assist behavior in the VF 8.
VinFast has not achieved the success it anticipated in the U.S., and the recent recall, which includes every VF 8 sold in the country, is unlikely to help. Regulatory authorities have identified a concerning safety issue: the electric SUV's driver-assist system can unexpectedly take control of the steering wheel. Consequently, following a comprehensive investigation, VinFast will need to address issues in 6,314 vehicles.
The main concern involves the VF 8’s Lane Keeping Assist (LKA). During wide turns, this feature can apply steering corrections so forcefully that drivers find it challenging to regain control. VinFast has acknowledged that the problem arises from the tuning of torque ratios within its advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS), resulting in inconsistent steering behavior. While no crashes related to this issue have been reported, U.S. regulators have deemed the situation serious enough to initiate a recall.
From Complaints to Recall
In September 2024, the ODI launched an investigation after receiving 14 complaints about the VF 8's LKA. These complaints indicated that the system struggled to accurately detect lanes, issued incorrect steering commands, and was hard to override. The ODI cautioned that this issue could require significant control effort from drivers, raising the likelihood of a crash.
Owners Describe Close Calls
Some drivers have shared truly alarming experiences. One individual recounted that the VF 8 jerked the steering wheel with such intensity during turns that it nearly caused a collision with a concrete wall, claiming this had occurred around 30 times since taking delivery. Another reported that the LKA consistently pulled the car back to the center, became impossible to disable, and left them anxious about driving the vehicle altogether.
To remedy the situation, VinFast will provide a free software update aimed at reducing steering vibration. The update is intended to make it easier to override inputs and to slow the transition from automated control back to the driver. Notifications to owners will be sent out on October 24, with the recall itself commencing three days earlier.
