The new GR Supra racer features a Lexus-based V8 engine that has been enlarged to 5.2 liters for racing purposes.
Next year, six Toyotas will participate in the Supercars Championship across two teams.
Attendees at the Bathurst 1000 next month will have the opportunity to see the car in person.
Traditionally, the Toyota Supra has been known for its six-cylinder engines, but now there is an exciting new V8 variant. Unfortunately, this model isn't available for purchase and has been specifically developed for Australia’s Supercars Championship, where it will compete against the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. We now have the chance to hear it for the first time.
After a lengthy development period, Toyota unveiled its new Supra race car this week in anticipation of its racing debut next year. The vehicle is powered by the same fundamental 2UR-GSE V8 engine as the Lexus LC 500 and RC F, but it has been upgraded to a displacement of 5.2 liters to comply with regulations.
Both the Camaro and Mustang utilized in the Supercars Championship sound exceptional, and the new Supra is no exception. The V8 emits a powerful growl, and since it doesn’t need to adhere to stringent emissions and noise regulations like the road versions of the engine, it has a distinctly different sound while still retaining a recognizable character. Australian racetracks are about to experience an enhanced auditory landscape.
A Unique Sound
Recently, Toyota Australia's vice president for sales, marketing, and franchise operations, Sean Hanley, remarked about the new racer, "What a sound. We anticipated the 2UR-GSE would sound fantastic, but hearing it at full throttle? Absolutely spine-tingling. This isn’t merely an engine roar; it’s the sound of passion, precision, and progress."
On the Starting Grid Next Year
Next year's Supercars Championship will see a total of six Supras take to the track. Two will be driven by Walkinshaw Andretti United, while the remaining four will compete under the Brad Jones Racing team. The car will make its public debut at the Bathurst 1000 next month and will also be showcased at other races later this season in the Supercars Championship.
In terms of design, Toyota has made significant modifications to the Supra’s exterior to ready it for racing, while still keeping most of the road car's recognizable features. Notable enhancements include a prominent rear wing, a large rear diffuser, new rocker panels, and center-locking race wheels.
