The first Neue Klasse sedan has been revealed with a revived nameplate, a sleek design, and a pivotal role in the brand's electric future.

BMW's i3 electric sedan is set to launch in 2026, following the closely related iX3 SUV. This model will utilize the Neue Klasse platform and will have a performance-oriented M-branded version. The i3 will be part of BMW's new 3-Series lineup alongside the internal combustion engine variant.

The introduction of the new 2026 iX3 signifies more than just another model for BMW; it marks the onset of the Neue Klasse era, paving the way for 40 new or refreshed models anticipated by 2027. A key model will be the all-electric 3-Series sedan, simply named i3, which BMW has previewed in camouflaged form ahead of its official launch next year.

      Closer to Reality

Earlier this year, BMW presented a similarly camouflaged prototype of the i3 in China, but the latest version seems closer to production. It now features final LED headlights and taillights, replaces provisional elements, and boasts a new set of alloy wheels. The overall design resembles an evolution of the Vision Neue Klasse concept from 2023, with refined details.

Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, stated that the new i3 will debut in 2026 as the first variant of the next-generation 3-Series. Despite sharing a design, these two vehicles will utilize different platforms, similar to the distinction between the iX3 and X3.

"The next vehicle is already waiting in the wings," Zipse mentioned. "The details are still hidden beneath the camouflage, but I’m sure you’ll recognize the classic proportions of a sporty sedan."

He emphasized the significance of the 3-Series in BMW's identity. "For the past 50 years and over seven model generations, no other vehicle has been as closely linked to the BMW brand's success. The 3 Series embodies everything that is at the core of BMW: Innovation, digital user experience, comfort, and sportiness, all contributing to an unparalleled driving experience."

The upcoming model will enhance these attributes, incorporating advanced technology related to electric motors, batteries, connectivity, and autonomous driving systems.

Considering that the larger and less aerodynamically efficient iX3 already achieves an EPA rating of 400 miles, it is reasonable to assume that the i3’s lower and sleeker profile could extend that impressive range even further.

      Expanding the Lineup

The BMW Vision Driving Experience concept previews the i3M.

The i3 will not be alone for long. Zipse confirmed that additional variants will follow its launch, including performance-oriented models. An electric version of the M3 is already under development, equipped with four electric motors and technology inspired by the Vision Driving Experience concept showcased earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the next generation of combustion-powered 3-Series will reflect much of the i3's styling and cabin design, although it will use an updated version of the existing platform since the Neue Klasse architecture is exclusively for electric vehicles. Spy photos indicate subtle proportional differences between the two, with the ICE model featuring a longer hood and a more upright windshield.

      40 New Models By 2027

Aside from the new iX3 and i3 variants, the Neue Klasse concept will gradually extend to the entire BMW lineup. Zipse indicated that every model from 2026 onward will be new, implying that the next 12 months will be filled with various mid-life updates.

BMW also provided a preview of its refreshed lineup, showcasing the silhouettes of "40 new and facelifted" models expected to arrive by 2027. These outlines were displayed on a video wall during the iX3’s presentation, though the low resolution made it difficult to discern finer details.
