ICE Raids Hyundai's Georgia Facility, Resulting in the Detention of Hundreds | Carscoops

US immigration authorities have taken at least 450 individuals into custody during a raid at Hyundai's electric vehicle plant in Georgia.

Collaboration between ICE, Homeland Security, the FBI, DEA, and the Atlanta ATF enabled the raid on the facility.

The operation at the newly established $7.6 billion plant resulted in the detention of multiple South Korean nationals.

US immigration officials have arrested approximately 450 people in a raid at Hyundai’s recently launched EV plant in Georgia. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Atlanta confirmed the capture of hundreds of “unlawful aliens,” sparking concern from South Korea over reports indicating that 30 of those detained are citizens of South Korea.

ATF Atlanta stated that it coordinated with several federal agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the FBI, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), to carry out the operation on September 4. The executed search warrant referenced allegations regarding “unlawful employment practices and other serious federal offenses,” according to the Department of Homeland Security.

“Today @ATFAtlanta collaborated with HSI, FBI, DEA, ICE, GSP, and other agencies in a significant immigration enforcement action at the Hyundai mega site battery plant in Bryan County, GA, resulting in the detention of around 450 unlawful aliens, underscoring our commitment to community safety,” ATF Atlanta posted on X.

      A High-Profile Target

The raid took place at the $7.6 billion, 3,000-acre electric vehicle facility that Hyundai opened near Savannah last year. Agents concentrated their efforts on the construction area of the new battery plant, which is expected to commence operations in 2026. Hyundai asserted that the raid did not affect the adjacent EV plant, which is currently manufacturing the Ioniq 5 and 9.

Although US authorities have not disclosed the identities or specifics of the 450 individuals detained at the site, reports from Korean media suggest that 30 of them are South Korean nationals, raising concerns among the country’s lawmakers.

      Diplomatic Tension

“The economic operations of Korean investment corporations and the rights of Korean citizens should not be unjustly compromised during US law enforcement activities,” a representative from the South Korean foreign ministry stated. South Korea has sent diplomats to the location, according to BBC News.

President Trump vowed to deport undocumented migrants in the lead-up to his 2024 election campaign, yet he has also expressed openness to foreign companies establishing manufacturing operations in the US, a policy reflected in Hyundai's initiatives.
