Genesis Explains Why Magma Will Provide a Distinct Experience Compared to Hyundai N | Carscoops

The head of Hyundai's European tech center stated that software can significantly change the experience of driving a car.

The Magma models will be more advanced and luxurious compared to Hyundai’s N lineup.

Following the GV60 Magma, upcoming high-performance Genesis models will be designed and fine-tuned in Europe.

Similar to the Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT, the GV60 Magma will boast over 600 hp from dual motors.

A new high-performance version of the Genesis GV60 is imminent, thanks to the brand's new Magma division. Although it will share many components with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT, Genesis asserts that this dynamic EV will possess a distinctive character, partly due to innovative software.

The new GV60 Magma has been created in Korea; however, all future Magma vehicles will be developed and calibrated at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center located near Frankfurt, Germany. Tyrone Johnson leads this facility and, having played a key role in developing the last Ford Focus RS, he is well-suited for the task.

In a recent interview with Top Gear, Johnson revealed that Magma models from Germany are set to enter the market in 2027, including versions based on the GV80 and G80. He also mentioned that the electric models from Magma will be designed to be more refined and luxurious compared to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

“N is ‘corner rascal,’” he explained. “A Magma isn’t focused on the track, but it will be capable on one. It represents a more refined, luxurious driving experience. While power is essential, and modifications to motors and engines are significant, it doesn't have to be the top performer in its category. It simply needs adequate power. Weight is always a crucial factor, independent of luxury. Attention to weight is necessary, especially considering range is important; larger and heavier batteries lead to diminishing returns.”

      The Software Revolution

Johnson remarked that during most of his 40-year tenure in the automotive field, the differentiation between cars was primarily based on mechanical engineering. Currently, he explained, “it’s all software,” emphasizing that it’s now feasible to “fundamentally change a car with software.” This likely indicates that the GV60 Magma, along with other Magma models, will utilize different software from those in Hyundai’s N division, resulting in unique driving dynamics.

It’s very likely that the GV60 Magma will incorporate the same dual electric motors and 84 kWh battery pack as the Ioniq 5 N. Therefore, it should produce over 600 hp and be able to accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just over three seconds.
