      Ford engineered the electric F-150 Lightning to perform similarly to the gas-powered F-150. I have driven the EV previously and can confirm that, in nearly all respects, Ford has succeeded. The F-150 Lightning is a comfortable daily vehicle, particularly in the higher trims, and serves as a robust workhorse (albeit in limited scenarios). However, it falls short of some internal combustion engine (ICE) F-150 variants in off-road capabilities, lacking a true equivalent to the rugged Tremor. It appears this gap will be addressed soon, as recent spy photos reveal a specialized four-wheel-drive model in testing.

      The images depict a lifted F-150 Lightning equipped with various Tremor features. Notably, it sports 275/65 Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tires mounted on 18-inch wheels. Additionally, there are off-road running boards, similar to those found on the Tremor and Raptor. It's challenging to ascertain what other modifications are present beneath the truck, but I believe the independent rear suspension components appear significantly more robust than those on the standard version. I could be mistaken, but I don't think so.

      In terms of design, the cab seems largely unchanged. The camouflage conceals the bed, but the tailgate remains visible; however, I don’t see anything particularly noteworthy there. What stands out to me is a distinctive grille design that features a considerable amount of black plastic, complemented by a striking blue stripe running from one headlight to the other. This could serve as a visual differentiator, akin to the orange accents found on gas Tremor models. Finally, I also observe tow hooks protruding from the front.

      It’s not surprising that Ford would develop an off-road-oriented F-150 Lightning model. Chevrolet already markets a Silverado EV Trail Boss, and other vehicles like the Rivian R1T are clearly aimed at adventure enthusiasts. Ford CEO Jim Farley hinted to The Drive in a 2021 interview that such a truck was in the pipeline. When our Editor-in-Chief, Kyle Cheromcha, inquired about the possibility of an F-150 Lightning Tremor or Raptor, Farley replied:

      “That is the right question, because that is our strategy. We have Tremors, and Raptors, and Broncos, and F-150s, and there will be new icons we believe such as Maverick… that is our strategy, and we are going to double down on those. Just because we’re transitioning to digital—I don’t even want to say electric—going digital, that doesn’t change anything. We’re going to continue to invest in those.”

      It appears we won’t have to wait much longer for that vehicle.
