Besides Europe, the new VW T-Roc will hold significant importance for the brand in South America.
Volkswagen is set to reveal the next T-Roc at the forthcoming Munich Motor Show.
Prototype images of the new model were leaked online earlier this year.
The compact SUV will feature internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid, and fully electric powertrains.
Although Western auto shows have diminished since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Munich Motor Show in September remains a crucial event in the automotive calendar and will see the debut of the new VW T-Roc. This second-generation model will be available with ICE, hybrid, and battery electric options and has recently been teased for the first time.
The released image of the T-Roc displays a black prototype adorned with bright yellow text. While it only presents the new model from the side, it's clear that this is the same vehicle depicted in earlier leaked images.
Those earlier photos revealed the new T-Roc featuring a completely revamped front end, characterized by a large black grille with honeycomb cutouts, sharp headlights, and an LED light bar. Significant alterations have also been made to the rear of the model, including new LED taillights.
While the T-Roc may not be available in the United States, it is an extremely crucial vehicle for VW in Europe. It consistently ranks among the best-selling models on the continent, often competing with the likes of the Golf, Renault Clio, and Dacia Sandero in sales volume. Therefore, this new model must attract customers, or VW’s challenges in Europe could worsen.
Enhancing the Powertrain Variety
In addition to combustion models, VW will provide the new T-Roc with a full-hybrid system that will also be utilized in the Golf and Tiguan. This system combines a petrol engine with an electric motor that can independently power the rear wheels or work in conjunction with the engine, functioning similarly to Toyota’s approach where the system can alternate between petrol, electric, or a combination of both as needed.
VW CEO Thomas Schäfer emphasized that this hybrid variant will be especially significant in South America.
“We had to do it anyway because South America requires an HEV drivetrain – and the T-Roc is manufactured in South America for South America, and also in China,” he informed Autocar. “Interestingly, HEV has also emerged as a major theme in the US specifically. It's a technology that many believed was no longer necessary, but now with the slowdown of BEV in the US, the focus is shifting towards HEVs.”
Electric Future
The electric version of the T-Roc will be based on VW’s new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), making it only the second model to utilize this architecture. It will feature ultra-fast charging and Level 4 autonomous capabilities.
