If you've been searching for an ideal combination of electric affordability and range, Nissan’s third-generation Leaf may be just what you need. Today, the company revealed that two versions of its revamped electric vehicle will start with an MSRP below $30,000, with the base Leaf (specifications still to be announced) expected to be under that threshold—even after including taxes, registration, and fees.
As Nissan remains tight-lipped on the base Leaf S, we can only discuss the next most affordable option, the S+, which has a starting price of $31,485 including destination fees (or $29,990 without, which is how Nissan claims to have two models priced “under $30k”). While you will end up spending more than that to drive away in a Leaf S+, you are getting a 300-mile electric vehicle that can charge at a Tesla Supercharger without paying any fees to Elon Musk. For just under $32k, you receive 214 horsepower and a range of 303 miles; we anticipate that the more affordable S model will feature a smaller battery and possibly a less powerful motor.
It's important to note that, at this price point, the Leaf isn't just an inexpensive EV; even a Honda HR-V starts at $27,650 with destination fees included. If you're in search of additional comfort, the price increases reasonably. Even the top-tier Platinum+ model starts well below the average price of a new vehicle. We previously named the Chevy Equinox as the “Value King,” but its reign is under threat. Thankfully, GM has a new (relatively) Bolt EUV on the horizon that is expected to compete directly with the Leaf, and since GM has been slightly vague about its timeline, it seems to be in a relatively advanced stage of development. However, even if it launches next year as anticipated, Nissan will have a full model year lead.
In the meantime, Tesla has introduced a new diner.
Below is the complete pricing for each model revealed so far (including a $1,495 destination fee):
LEAF S+: $31,485
LEAF SV+: $35,725
LEAF PLATINUM+: $40,485
