A classic Defender undergoes an electric vehicle transformation, concealing contemporary power and luxury behind its vintage aesthetics and rugged enhancements.
ECD Automotive has converted this classic Defender into a modern electric off-roader.
It boasts a 300 hp electric motor, an 84 kWh battery, and a choice between all-wheel drive (AWD) or rear-wheel drive (RWD).
The company claims that charging from 10 to 80 percent can be achieved in under an hour.
At first glance, this may seem like any other Land Rover Defender 110 restomod, but it's quite different. Although it retains the iconic rugged appearance typical of many restored Defenders, ECD Automotive’s Project Powder Keg has replaced its conventional drivetrain with a fully electric system, allowing its new owner to enjoy off-roading in complete silence.
However, it's advisable not to venture too far from urban areas, as this unique Defender is said to have a driving range of “up to” 200 miles (approximately 322 km).
The transformation is centered around ECD’s Electric Direct EV drivetrain, which swaps the traditional combustion system for an 84 kWh battery pack and an electric motor that delivers 300 horsepower and 368 lb-ft (499 Nm) of torque.
To maintain as much of the original model’s off-road capabilities as possible, the vehicle can operate in either two- or four-wheel drive. The company states that charging from 10-80 percent takes less than an hour.
Subtle Exterior Modifications
Externally, there are few indications of the Defender’s new powertrain, the most noticeable being the lack of exhaust pipes. It is finished in Bonatti Gray with Shadow Black accents and includes a six-point external roll cage. A new A-bar bumper has been added to the front, equipped with a Warn winch.
The roof now features a pair of new front-facing LED lights, while the rear sports additional lights, a steel bumper, and a new spare tire.
No restomodded Defender would be complete without an updated interior, and Project Powder Keg delivers just that. It comes with Recaro Orthoped seats upholstered in Veluto Pelle leather. Also included are a new Exmoor Evander steering wheel, custom gauges, billet aluminum accents, and a modern infotainment system.
There is no information available regarding the cost of this Land Rover’s transformation, but if you have to inquire, it likely means you’re not in the market for something of this caliber.
