Top Gun: Maverick grossed nearly $1.5 billion during the summer of 2022. Regardless of one’s opinions on the movie’s narrative, its supposed role as U.S. military propaganda, Tom Cruise’s personal life, or the studio’s recent media tactics, it undeniably stands out as a significant form of entertainment. Perhaps a pivotal factor in the return of cinema as we knew it after the lockdown, its visual allure is rooted in the fact that much of what you see on screen is genuine. While other major films often rely on green-screen technology to create digital heroes and villains, Cruise and his team opted to mount real IMAX cameras onto genuine F-18s purely for entertainment purposes.

This choice not only proved lucrative but also positively impacted the film’s final outcome. The visible reactions to g-forces on the actors’ faces, the way sunlight glimmers off scratched aircraft canopies, or simply knowing that much of what you witness is largely authentic lends Top Gun: Maverick a unique, palpable quality that elevates the stakes. This thought crossed my mind as I drove the 2025 Lamborghini Revuelto.

This connection isn't solely due to the red flip-cover that conceals the engine start button, or its bold launch control feature dubbed “Thrust Mode.” It's not even just because of this specific car's Lockheed Martin gray color. Rather, it's the stark reality that, unlike the digital Porsches and Xiaomis dominating today’s speed records, Lamborghini achieved this with real power—twelve glorious cylinders of combusting gasoline—arguably the main attraction.

      **The Basics**

Similar to the film, the Revuelto represents a nod to tradition. Lamborghini has been producing V12 flagship supercars for six decades, starting with the Miura. If the primary goal of any Lamborghini is to embody wildness, the Revuelto succeeds remarkably.

With its exposed radiators, prominent flying buttresses, rear tires that span nearly the width of a tank, exhaust tips positioned at a height comparable to a child's face, and a massive engine fully exposed to the elements, it arguably stands as the most outrageous vehicle in the brand's history. If you momentarily take off the nostalgia goggles and remove the Countach poster from your wall, you might recognize that the Revuelto aesthetically embodies the essence of Lamborghini more than any previous production V12 models, rendering even the Aventador somewhat ordinary by comparison.

This outrageous exterior conceals an interior that is surprisingly user-friendly. The build quality and controls from the Audi Group indicate considerable thought has gone into how drivers interact with this car. After a day of driving, I even adapted to the button-based turn signals and the right paddle for gear selection—features that might confuse those unfamiliar with Lamborghinis.

The concealed cupholders, reminiscent of a 997 Porsche 911, facilitate convenient coffee runs and are located beneath a slim passenger screen that displays speed, gear, and engine temperatures, allowing your co-driver to keep track as you pursue personal records.

With the car set to Corsa mode and the previously mentioned thrust mode activated, you might want someone else monitoring the gauges. You'll be too busy recovering from the intense acceleration that aggressively presses you into your seat while the road blurs beneath you.

A roaring 6.5-liter V12, combined with three electric motors, delivers an impressive 1,001 horsepower and 783 lb-ft of torque. Yes, it is a hybrid; "revuelto" translates to "mixed" in Spanish. Each front wheel is powered by an individual electric motor, with a third incorporated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. These electric elements primarily serve to enhance the performance of the V12, which takes on the bulk of the work. It reaches 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, and Lamborghini claims a top speed exceeding 217 mph.

When you press the accelerator to the floor, the Revuelto is unstoppable. You feel it in your neck, your stomach, and your ears. Unlike similar feats in, say, a high-end electric vehicle that may provide comparable acceleration, the Lamborghini doesn't relent past 100 mph. It keeps surging forward; the power seems endless, and the drama escalates to another level.

Launching a Porsche Taycan Turbo S feels like being ejected from a top-tier pitching machine at maximum speed, while launching a Revuelto feels like being propelled forward by the offspring of Shohei Ohtani and a dragon. On paper, the g-forces and launch speeds might be alike, but the latter clearly provides a far more compelling experience.

Supercars, including Lamborghinis, have become more manageable to drive around town than their daunting

In a time when electric vehicles are rapidly gaining speed at a much lower cost, the Revuelto justifies its $600k price and merits recognition for adhering to a V12 engine.
