The third-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA is approaching the conclusion of its development, and our sources have provided photos of the first prototypes on public roads. Although it's uncertain from these images if this is an internal-combustion engine or a battery-electric model, we won't have to wait much longer for more details. The subcompact crossover is anticipated to be available in dealerships next year.

The GLA and GLB serve distinctly different purposes for Mercedes, so it doesn't come as a surprise that the compact GLA stays true to its role. The larger, three-row GLB is as close to a minivan as one can get without having sliding doors, whereas the smaller two-row GLA offers a sportier hatchback aesthetic at the cost of some interior practicality.

Similar to the sleek CLA, the GLA will be built on the company’s new multi-energy platform. This means we can expect to see both battery-electric and internal combustion engine versions sharing the same design.

The design appears to be more aerodynamic compared to the current GLA. While some hood and side panel creases are visible on this prototype, they are so distorted that they may simply serve to disguise its final appearance. In contrast, the rear end seems less rounded than that of the current model, potentially making it look less like a four-wheeled sneaker.
