Kia’s Compact EV Might Emerge As One Of Its Most Exciting Performance Models | Carscoops

The forthcoming EV2 GT electric crossover could rival the top competitors in Europe with its impressive performance, unique design, and practical everyday use.

The new Kia EV2 GT may be equipped with dual motors producing up to 300 horsepower. Its European launch is scheduled for early 2026, with the GT variant being released shortly after.

The design maintains the striking concept styling while incorporating aggressive, unique elements specific to the GT model.

Kia’s electric vehicle strategy is gaining momentum with an extensive lineup of electrified options that, at first glance, make a certain American competitor appear somewhat lackluster. Though it won’t be available in the U.S., the next release from the Korean brand is its smallest electric model yet—the EV2 compact crossover.

Designed as an entry-level EV targeting urban efficiency and usability, it was showcased in concept form earlier this year. Despite its budget-friendly nature, the EV2 is also expected to come in a high-performance GT variant, promising exciting performance in a compact size.

For those intrigued by the concept of a small EV hatchback with sporty characteristics, here’s a detailed overview of what to anticipate from the EV2 in its GT variation.

      Bold Design

As it transitions from concept to production, the EV2 retains many of the significant design features from the show car, blending compact dimensions suited for the city with robust SUV attributes.

At the front, vertically split headlights frame a technical face with hook-shaped daytime running lights that extend back over the front fenders. The GT version amps up the visual impact with a prominent EV9-inspired lower intake, enhanced with color-coded elements separated by black accents for a modern, geometric look.

Prominent diamond-cut wheels and vibrant green brake calipers emphasize its sporty character. Additional design features include pronounced haunches, squared wheel arches, substantial lower cladding, and an upright profile. The rear design boasts a wide, clamshell-style tailgate complemented by angular LED taillights that cut into the rear fender trim.

      Intelligent Interior

Kia has given us a glimpse of the EV2’s interior through the concept shown earlier this year.

While the specifics of the production interior are still under wraps, the earlier concept provides some hints. The standard model will include over-the-air (OTA) software updates, standard smartphone connectivity, wireless charging, and a collection of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for safety.

In the GT version, expect to see notable features such as sporty bucket seats, neon green stitching, and exclusive color themes to distinguish it from the standard configurations.

      E-GMP Foundation

The EV2 is built on Hyundai Group’s E-GMP 400-volt architecture, which includes competitive fast-charging capabilities and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, similar to its larger electric siblings. The design places the battery pack beneath the floor and features a long wheelbase, optimizing interior space. It also provides the EV2 with a multi-link rear suspension and performance-oriented handling.

      Performance Potential

While precise powertrain details for the EV2 have not been disclosed, reports suggest that the base model will have a single front-mounted electric motor generating 150–200 horsepower, capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in the mid-7-second range.

In contrast, the GT variant is expected to utilize an all-wheel-drive system with a dual-motor configuration, achieving between 250–300 horsepower, potentially reducing acceleration times to around 5 seconds. It may also make use of the EV3’s larger 55kWh lithium-ion NMC battery, offering a driving range of approximately 270 miles (435 km). Enhanced sports steering and brakes will complement its performance features.

      Competitive Landscape

Key competitors for the EV2 include the Alpine A290 and the closely related Renault 5. Other challengers are the upcoming Volkswagen ID.2 GTI, Mini Cooper JCW, Fiat 500e Abarth, and the rumored ‘N’ version of Hyundai’s Inster.

Regarding the timeline for its introduction, Kia has announced that the production EV2 will make its global debut in early 2026, with the GT performance variant expected to follow shortly after. Manufacturing of the EV2 will occur in Slovakia for the European market, reflecting its focus on European consumers.
