AMG's Electric SUV Boasts Over 1,000 HP and Is a Stealthy Rival to the Urus | Carscoops

The high-performance luxury SUV flagship is expected to make its debut in 2027 and has been spotted testing its axial motor technology at the Nürburgring.

Development of Mercedes-AMG’s super-SUV has transitioned to the Nürburgring.

This electric rival to the Lamborghini Urus utilizes technology from AMG’s forthcoming four-door GT model.

A triple motor configuration could yield as much as 1,341 hp in the SUV’s most powerful variant.

Earlier this summer, Mercedes-AMG teased its upcoming electric GT with a four-door coupe concept that revealed a surprise of 1,341 hp (1,360 PS / 1,000 kW) beneath its vibrant orange exterior. However, the SUV version, seen in the latest spy shots, is likely to garner even more interest from the Affalterbach team.

Development for this unnamed, yet sporty utility vehicle has moved to the Nürburgring, where our spy photographer team was present to capture the electric SUV navigating the 12.9-mile (20.8 km) track.

Interestingly, the photographers noted that AMG’s engineers sometimes enter and exit the circuit through various barriers around the extensive track, possibly to evade cameras or prevent the publication of unrepresentative lap times. Nevertheless, in this instance, the two-row EV tackled all of the Ring’s numerous curves.

Although still heavily camouflaged, the prototype reveals a shape that leans more towards crossover than traditional upright SUV. Picture it more like a Lamborghini Urus or Ferrari Purosangue, rather than a Rolls-Royce Cullinan or Bentley Bentayga. It features flush door handles, frameless door glass, and a low ride height, but drivers will likely have the option to adjust the ground clearance through a drive mode selector that modifies the air suspension settings.

Not discernible in these images is the front-end design; however, teaser images of the new GLC EV’s illuminated grille released last week have provided insight into the future look of Mercedes-branded vehicles. It's probable that AMG’s SUV will have a distinct styling.

The GT XX sedan concept presented an innovative interpretation of AMG’s Panamericana grille, highlighting an illuminated outer frame while keeping the vertical grille bars and the Mercedes star unlit.

We do know that the production version of the XX shares the AMG.EA platform with the SUV, along with the Yasa axial flux motor technology. While the specific specifications of the SUV remain closely guarded, it is understood it could be available in both two and three-motor configurations, with the most powerful variant potentially delivering 1,341 hp.

This figure stands in contrast to the 715 hp (725 PS) of the 6.5-liter V12 Purosangue, and while the two won't be comparable in terms of sound, the AMG will not be entirely silent. It will feature a synthesized sound that could imitate the tone of an AMG V8 through speakers in its headlights, and simulated shifting is also expected. The SUV is anticipated to launch in 2027, a year after the sedan.
