Porsche has unveiled updated versions of the 911 Cup and 911 GT3 R race cars.
The 911 Cup, which is based on the 992.2, comes with numerous enhancements. In contrast to its predecessor, the 911 GT3 Cup, it has eliminated daytime running lights to reduce repair costs after inevitable crashes. It features a new three-piece front lip design, allowing only damaged sections to be replaced after contact.
Subtle Modifications, Smarter Features
In addition to crash protection modifications, the vehicle boasts improved aerodynamics with new fender vents, a redesigned rear wing, and a fresh engine compartment cover.
Under the rear deck lid, the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine now features additional components from the street version. These include “flow-optimized individual throttle valves and camshafts with extended valve opening durations.” Porsche states this “removes the necessity for a centrally positioned throttle valve, permitting the installation of an air restrictor, essential for competing in various motor racing championships.”
The engine has also been enhanced, increasing output from 503 hp (375 kW / 510 PS) to 512 hp (382 kW / 519 PS). It is paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox, now equipped with a four-disc sintered metal racing clutch.
Performance Enhancements Inside and Out
Drivers will benefit from a new automatic engine restart feature that engages once the clutch pedal is pressed after a stall. Additionally, a new strobe light function signals a stall to other drivers through the brake lights.
In terms of performance, the 911 Cup is equipped with thicker front brakes featuring larger cooling channels for better heat management. These are complemented by wider brake pads, a larger brake fluid reservoir, and an upgraded anti-lock braking system. Engineers have also refined the steering for a tighter turning radius.
The interior upgrades include a new multi-function steering wheel with illuminated color buttons, streamlined switchgear, and added foam padding for extra protection. A market-specific air conditioning system offers three settings: On, Off, and Eco, with the last option only allowing air conditioning when the car is not at full throttle.
Porsche has implemented other enhancements, such as a menu display allowing crew members to adjust settings without a laptop connection. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System now shows tire temperatures on the main display.
Additional features include a “significantly more powerful GPS antenna” and a new pre-kill function that automatically turns off the engine when the car is stationary during pit stops.
911 GT3 R: Balanced and Refined
In addition to the 911 Cup designed for one-make series, Porsche has also launched an updated 911 GT3 R. This version includes several suspension and styling adjustments aimed at achieving “more balanced handling and enhanced drivability.”
Regarding its appearance, the latest model sports new ventiducts on the front wheel arches, which improve aerodynamics and help mitigate front-end compression during deceleration.
At the rear, it features a swan-neck wing with a small Gurney flap that adds extra downforce. Buyers will notice a fully enclosed underbody, an upgraded anti-lock braking system, and optimized kinematics to lessen rear-end compression during hard acceleration.
Engineers have installed new ceramic wheel bearings and modified centering pins for easier drive shaft installation. The model is also enhanced with better cooling for the brake and power steering systems, along with a “modified driver air vent for consistent air circulation in the cockpit.”
Other notable features include a removable data logger USB stick for easy access to racing telemetry. Several previous optional packages, such as the sensor package, endurance package, pit lane link package, and camera package, have been made standard equipment.
Powering the 911 GT3 R is a 4.2-liter flat-six engine, producing up to 557 hp (416 kW / 566 PS), though actual output is determined by race officials.
