It comes as no surprise that GM has publicly stated this week that Nürburgring lap times still hold significance. When you’re investing millions, that speaks volumes. However, if you’re enlisting someone as skilled as Bob Sorokanich to express your views, you might as well allow him to take the lead.

I won't reiterate his arguments here; they are exactly what you would anticipate from a company engaged in an expensive development rivalry with a nearby competitor. Regardless of one's opinion on the current automotive landscape, this competition over lap times is a refreshing change in an industry grappling with a crisis of enthusiasm. Yet, there is optimism on that front, even if it takes on unexpected forms.

As long as there are engineers striving to excel in their craft, that ambition will always become evident. We don’t need the ‘Ring to fuel automakers' passion; we need it to ensure they remain truthful.

Criticize ‘Ring-centric development all you want; you’d have a point. For the majority of vehicles partially developed on what is essentially Germany’s least effective toll road, lap times are largely inconsequential. In fact, many manufacturers are attempting to maximize their time on the track to gain insights into the actual performance of their vehicles. With a few exceptions, most prototypes testing in and around the facility will never appear on its record board.

Moreover, many modern features we now take for granted are a result of the ‘Ring, its verdant landscapes elevating the expectations of consumers who have come to believe that newer models must be larger, faster, and pricier. It’s a mixed blessing, and I fully acknowledge that. I dislike putting new summer tires on 20- and 21-inch wheels just as much as anyone else.

In a climate where corporations can shape narratives to suit their interests, the ‘Ring remains a steadfast reference point. Words have never been less expensive; hiring Bob to assert that Chevy champions the ‘Ring is far less costly than actually demonstrating it with a car on the track.

Therefore, as long as automakers are ready to back up their claims financially, I firmly believe that ‘Ring times still hold importance. And you should too.
