I can’t pinpoint the exact moment, but the Acura Integra Type R has emerged as the benchmark and emblematic example of controversially priced modern enthusiast classics. My friend Caleb shared about a model with under 2,000 miles that went for $63,800 back in 2018. While that seemed excessive at the time, the Gran Turismo mainstay has unfortunately more than kept pace with inflation. Today, a 2001 Phoenix Yellow model with 4,800 miles recently sold on Bring a Trailer for $204,204.

This car was one of 1,173 reportedly produced for sale in the U.S. for its model year. It is in immaculate condition as one would expect; a completely unmodified coupe with 25-year-old tires, part of the RealTime Collection Hall, which may partially clarify the exorbitant price. Peter Cunningham's RealTime Racing notably excelled in North American touring car competitions with these, and if anyone understands the importance of the Integra Type R, it’s that team.

Like all American Integra Type Rs, this high-revving 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine produces 195 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. When new, this vehicle had a price tag of $24,930, which is equivalent to about $45,176 today. That inflation adjustment surprisingly aligns closely with the cost of a new Civic Type R, which will run you at least $47,045 in 2025. You could buy four of those for what the third owner of this Integra has paid.

Everything that can be articulated about the phenomenon of these blue-collar performance cars, now regarded as collectibles and fetching prices akin to 911 Turbos, has mostly been expressed. Some may lament this trend. Others adopt a neutral stance, claiming the market defines value. Meanwhile, others in the comments will celebrate it, as they already possess one, two, or more.

The Integra Type R rightfully earns its esteemed reputation, as anyone fortunate enough to drive one would attest. With a curb weight of 2,400 pounds, an 8,400-rpm redline, and a front-wheel-drive chassis that sets the standard for comparison, it certainly deserves that recognition. Everyone has their threshold, though. If you had asked me seven years ago what mine was, it’s reasonable to think it would have been below $63,000. But now, given this situation? $63K seems like a fairly good deal, and that’s how perceptions shift. I would only consider spending that on a Japanese version with superior headlights, however.
