Mercedes-Benz clearly recognizes that the second-generation AMG GT differs significantly from its predecessor. The new version has been altered due to its shared platform with the latest SL-Class, evolving into a 2+2 format.
On Friday, the AMG team in Affalterbach unveiled teaser images along with a few brief statements regarding the Concept AMG GT Track Sport, which appears to be much more than just a concept. It comes across as nearly production-ready. The teaser images seem intended to allow this sports car to commence testing on both racetracks and public roads without inciting excessive speculation.
A V8 engine is confirmed under the hood, and it’s likely the AMG team’s twin-turbocharged configuration with a hot-V design. Expect output to exceed 600 horsepower, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip rear differential. Adaptive shocks and substantial (possibly carbon ceramic) brakes are likely to ensure control.
This coupe certainly looks the part. Despite its camouflage, we can see a swan-neck rear wing and a large front splitter. A wheel situated on the ground next to the car appears to be fitted with a street-legal Michelin tire, likely a Cup 2 R, which would make it suitable for both street and track. It resembles a rival to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
Details are sparse at this stage, but Mercedes referred to this coupe as an “uncompromising sports car concept,” emphasizing that it aims to “set record lap times.” It seems the AMG team has taken it personally after the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with a Manthey Performance Kit recorded a lap time of 6:43.3 at the Nürburgring in 2021, significantly outperforming the 6:48 of the previous AMG GT Black Series. One can assume this “concept” is out to seek revenge on the Green Hell.
Mercedes indicated that the GT family is not yet complete, reinforcing that the term concept in the name of this vehicle carries significant weight. This is indeed happening.
