Trademarks can reveal a lot about a secretive company that tends to keep its strategies under wraps, such as Ferrari. Recently, the brand registered the name “849 Testarossa” in Iceland, as reported by CarBuzz, leading to speculation about a potential revival of the ’80s classic.

Honestly, if the trademark was solely for “Testarossa,” without any numbers, it might not hold much significance. Companies need to safeguard and control their intellectual property, and renewing long-established trademarks is part of that process. Ferrari continues to license scale models of the sports car and the iconic racing vehicle that inspired it, in addition to other merchandise. However, this new trademark, “849 Testarossa,” is particularly recent, having been registered only on July 21, and is notably specific. Such naming conventions have appeared before in the Ferrari lineup, including models like the 812 Superfast.

The crucial question is what form a potential revival would take. If it’s not intended as a regular model, it might be an “Icona” limited-production vehicle similar to the Daytona SP3—and there’s little doubt that the Testarossa qualifies as one of Ferrari’s notable icons. I still recall the widespread recognition it enjoyed during my childhood in the ’90s, more than a decade after it was first introduced.

In a time when Lamborghini could bring back the Countach, the idea of a reborn Testarossa doesn’t seem unreasonable. Considering that 2025 will mark the 40th anniversary of the 1985 Testarossa's debut model year, I would wager on its return.

A representation of ’80s excellence. Ferrari
