I initially thought the Genesis GV90 might be a contender for high-end Range Rover competition, but it appears it could be aiming for the likes of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. A prototype has been observed featuring rear coach doors that open backwards, commonly referred to as suicide doors, which are typically associated with ultra-luxury vehicles. These unique doors are also found on some extended-cab pickup trucks and the Mazda RX-8. Nevertheless, this new Korean flagship SUV seems likely to be more akin to the ultra-luxurious Neolun concept than anticipated.
In fact, Genesis’ design chief Sangyup Lee mentioned over a year ago that these reverse-hinged rear doors would be included in one of the brand’s models “sooner or later.” That “sooner” might just be a few months away. Given that context, it’s reasonable to conclude that this prototype is likely being prepared for production rather than being just a standalone demo or concept car.
Korean Car Blog, crediting @aaeichhorn1 on Instagram and spies at Kindel Auto, shared a side profile photo of what is certainly a GV90 prototype. The camouflage over the rear door has openings for door handles in two different locations, and a closer inspection reveals that the quarter panel above the rear wheel is missing, exposing a hinge meant for the rear door to open backwards.
I’m not attempting to spin a conspiracy, but part of me wonders if Genesis intentionally poorly covered this prototype so that blogs like this would circulate online today. The test vehicle is lacking an entire quarter panel, and the camo meant to conceal it is lifted just enough to reveal this intriguing, previously hinted feature.
Regardless, it’s exciting to see. I had somewhat forgotten that the GV90 was in development until this landed on my desk, and now I’m eager for its release. It isn’t just because of the door feature—Bramble the dog and I have been thoroughly impressed with Genesis SUVs, and I’m hopeful that this one will be extraordinary when it hits the market.
Specifications for the GV90 have not been confirmed, but it's been widely rumored that it will be fully electric, feature three rows of seating, and utilize the eM platform, which supports 800-volt charging and Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities. Naturally, it will also be positioned as a serious luxury vehicle. The Neolun concept offers our clearest insight into what Genesis aims to achieve with this model.
The GV90 prototypes have been spotted several times this summer, although it seems not all of them may feature this door configuration. It’s possible that it will only be available as an option on a top-tier trim for the model.
The GV90 is generally anticipated to launch next year, with pricing likely starting in the low six-figure range. The GV80 can already be configured to $85,000 and beyond, despite starting under $60,000.
