China's Upcoming Supercar Is Targeting Ferrari, and They're Taking It Seriously Now | Carscoops

The unnamed supercar from Great Wall Motors (GWM) is set to feature a carbon fiber monocoque and a mid-mounted plug-in hybrid V8 engine.

During the company's 35th anniversary celebration, GWM's boss teased the mid-engine supercar, which is expected to be powered by the plug-in hybrid twin-turbo V8 revealed at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show. Competing models include the BYD Yangwang U9, Aion Hyper SSR, and the plug-in hybrid Ferrari SF90.

China's supercar market is gaining momentum, and it seems another significant competitor is preparing to join. In a scene already featuring the FAW Hongqi S9, the BYD Yangwang U9, and the GAC Aion Hyper SSR, GWM has hinted at its own supercar, a project five years in the making.

On July 23, a teaser image was posted by GWM chairman Wei Jianjun on the Chinese social media platform Weibo to commemorate the company's 35th anniversary. While Jianjun did not specifically name the vehicle, the concealed supercar was prominently displayed amongst company executives in the photo, drawing significant attention.

The unnamed model is covered by a black veil, but its silhouette reveals some hints. It boasts the traditional mid-engine proportions: low, wide, and extended at the rear, featuring a long-tail design. The front showcases aggressive bumper intakes and fender-mounted headlights reminiscent of a Porsche. The side profile also reveals additional cooling intakes, supporting the mid-engine layout theory.

Although GWM has not provided official specifications, it is anticipated that the car will utilize a newly developed bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8 combined with a plug-in hybrid system. This powertrain, created in-house, was first showcased at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show. GWM intends to implement this powertrain in various models, including high-performance trucks and SUVs.

GWM’s Chief Technology Officer, Wu Huixiao, confirmed the project's existence in April 2025, indicating it has been in development for five years with a focus on achieving high performance at a reasonable price. She also mentioned that the supercar would feature a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and suggested it could outperform the Ferrari SF90. To enhance its dynamic performance, GWM enlisted European track experts for its development.

While GWM has yet to announce an official launch date, the supercar is expected to be unveiled before the year ends. Car News China predicts its starting price will exceed ¥1 million (approximately $140,000), making it more affordable than its all-electric competitors, as the GAC Aion Hyper SSR starts at ¥1,286,000 ($179,200) and the BYD Yangwang U9 begins at ¥1,680,000 ($234,200).
