Another beloved sedan is heading to Car Heaven. The Acura TLX will officially be discontinued at the end of the month, concluding production after 30 years and 1.2 million units sold.
The automaker has stated that the decision to end the TLX was made to “better align with the evolving needs of our customers and the changing landscape of the automotive industry.” They also mentioned that despite its long-standing popularity, the model’s sales have been consistently decreasing as consumers shift toward SUVs.
Initially launched as the Acura TL in 1995, the TLX has been in continuous production ever since. Over the years, both the TL and TLX designs have evolved to reflect current trends, yet they have consistently maintained a sharp, sporty appearance without being excessive. Additionally, its wide array of trims, ranging from mild variants to the Type S and even the PMC Edition, offered customers with diverse preferences the opportunity to find the right model.
Last fall, I had the opportunity to drive a TLX Type S for the first time and was impressed by its versatility. Although I found the styling to be a bit overdone, its size, driving dynamics, comfort, and fuel efficiency were genuinely exceptional. During a pit stop at a Buc-ee’s north of Nashville, Tennessee, I had two different individuals approach me to compliment me on my “purchase.” It was clear that the TLX had garnered a following.
With Acura recently introducing the ADX crossover and the impending re-launch of the RSX as an electric crossover, the TLX will not be succeeded by a conventional three-box sedan.
