Mitsubishi tends to be somewhat overlooked by my peers in the industry, yet the Japanese manufacturer is still aiming to expand its lineup in the U.S. market annually through 2030. I believe that more individuals should focus on Mitsubishi's budget-friendly models, especially since it is about to introduce the cheapest, and perhaps most fuel-efficient, three-row SUV available.

The major highlight for the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander is its all-new mild hybrid powertrain, which is a first for the brand. I have never experienced the previous 2.5-liter four-cylinder MIVEC engine, which delivered only 181 horsepower, so I can't say I missed much. (Admittedly, some of my peers’ dismissive views of Mitsubishi might be warranted.)

The SUV will now feature a 1.5-liter 16-valve four-cylinder turbo combined with a mild hybrid system. Detailed specifications regarding power, pricing, and fuel efficiency are yet to be announced. However, Mitsubishi assures that “the new powertrain will enhance confidence and drivability, thanks to electrified torque assisting with off-the-line acceleration,” as stated in a press release.

It already looks quite appealing and is very affordable within its category. The 2025 Outlander S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) starts at $31,795 and includes a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty. If the new model becomes a bit pricier but offers better features, it shouldn't be overlooked.

This really is an impressive-looking vehicle. Mitsubishi

The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (a different variant; the plug-in hybrid, starting at $40,445 with all-wheel drive) will receive a larger battery to extend its all-electric range. Additionally, its dampers, springs, stabilizer bars, and bushings have been modified to enhance ride comfort and steering response.

The PHEV will also incorporate new feature upgrades that the standard Outlander received for 2025, such as improved sound insulation, heated and cooled front seats, redesigned interior elements (including cupholders and storage), a Yamaha-branded sound system, and an optional larger display.

While the Outlander PHEV remains the flagship model, it will align with the visual updates of the regular Outlander for next year. Mitsubishi

The Eclipse Cross will also receive some cosmetic changes, while the Outlander Sport will continue as is for 2026.

Mitsubishi is set to launch Trail Editions of the Outlander and Outlander Sport next year, featuring “model-specific graphics and trim packages, unique wheels, dealer-available off-road tires and accessory kits, along with Thule roof racks and mounts.” This seems rather low-effort to me; however, a trim package can mean anything. Perhaps the graphics package will turn out to be interesting—Mitsubishi has a history of presenting bold decals on its vehicles for some reason.

The Mirage will cease production, but it was previously possible to order it with Ralliart graphics.

On a more serious note, I find the new mild hybrid Outlander quite intriguing. While PHEVs are excellent, they work best if most of your driving is within a close range. A mild hybrid is more suitable for longer journeys and adventures.

On paper, the Outlander offers remarkable value if you can overlook the low horsepower rating—a brand-new all-wheel-drive seven-seater SUV for around $35,000 is quite rare in 2025! The current Outlander AWD claims to achieve 27 mpg in combined driving (24 city, 31 highway). If the new turbo electric hybrid configuration improves upon that and addresses the vehicle's limitations, it will be a strong contender even without true low-range or serious off-road capabilities.

Mitsubishi might not have the same impressive lineup it had in the 90s, but I wouldn’t dismiss them just yet.
