Porsche May Reveal a New Macan ICE as Early as March | Carscoops

Porsche is reportedly reconsidering its choice to discontinue the gas-powered version of the Macan.

This shift indicates a strong commitment to internal combustion models in the near term.

However, it may still take several years before a new Macan ICE is produced.

Porsche might be on the verge of reversing one of its significant decisions. A recent report suggests the company is reevaluating its plan to phase out the internal combustion version of the Macan, its top-selling crossover. Previously, the company had confidently indicated the gas-powered Macan would be ending, but that perspective seems to be changing.

There have been rumors that changes could happen as soon as this year. Lutz Meschke, Porsche's Chief Financial Officer, mentioned in January, “We are exploring the possibility of equipping some of the originally planned electric models with hybrid drives or internal combustion engines in the future.” His comments have led to increased scrutiny, and one publication claims an announcement might be imminent.

According to Car Magazine, “A combustion version – likely sharing the platform with the new Audi Q5 – would probably take three years to develop, leading to a prolonged absence of one of Porsche’s top sellers. An announcement is anticipated in March.” While that is still a few months away, developing such models does take time.

If this is accurate, it would indicate that Porsche is working hard to revise its plans in the interim. Announcing a new Macan ICE in March 2026 could also create a sense of urgency about its launch. If Porsche decides to pursue this direction, and all signs suggest they are at least contemplating it, we might see test mules by the end of the year.

With the latest Audi Q5 already in production, Porsche wouldn't be starting from square one. Sharing a platform could expedite development and help manage expenses. The real challenge will be keeping Macan customers engaged during this period.

The Macan EV is currently performing well.

That will be the biggest challenge, but the Macan EV is not underperforming. Porsche sold 18,278 units in the last quarter of 2024. While regulations in Europe led to the end of the Macan ICE, it's promising for Porsche that the EV version accounted for 66 percent of the model’s sales over the year.

This is a hopeful sign, though the company is clearly monitoring future developments. Models like the Taycan have demonstrated how EV sales can decline over time. The current objective is to maintain momentum while preparing for a potential return to combustion.
