There’s a saying: Two’s company, three’s a crowd. It seems Mercedes-Benz has decided to take action before any more of its AMG One hypercars go up in flames, initiating a recall in its home country due to a fire risk associated with its adjustable aerodynamics system. According to Mercedes, improperly installed or missing components in the hydraulic system that operates the rear wing could cause a fluid leak, and hydraulic fluid is known to ignite easily under certain conditions.

The hydraulic rear wing is just one of the many adjustable features of the AMG One, all of which interact with the vehicle’s intricate drive mode system. Besides its exceptional performance, this feature is one of the car's most impressive aspects, and since the wing deploys based on various parameters, it’s not merely a set-and-forget feature that owners can overlook. Of the approximately 275 units known to exist, 219 must be inspected to ensure they are assembled safely.

Mercedes-Benz has refrained from directly linking this issue to the fires that have completely engulfed two of its Formula 1 cars for the street, but their notice is brief and lacks detailed information about the potential defect. You can find it here; just use your browser’s translation tool. Assuming this fix is related, it unfortunately comes too late for the owners of the two known lost cars.

The latest incident of an AMG One catching fire, linked above, occurred on public roads in Germany and is the first known instance of a car being lost to fire while in customer ownership. The previous fire took place back in 2023, before many vehicles had been delivered. That incident occurred in a transporter while the car was being moved between assembly locations, and Mercedes confirmed that they have no information regarding the cause of that fire.

It appears that F1 cars are not designed to be street vehicles, and now Mercedes has a recall to demonstrate this.
