The shift from analog gauge needles to omnipresent screens is a disappointing setback for automotive artistry. However, after spending a week in a new Porsche Taycan, I've realized that the digital dashboards produced by this German brand stand out significantly compared to others in 2025. This is due to two main reasons.

Firstly, while most car manufacturers simply place a rectangular screen in front of the steering wheel, Porsche's clusters are uniquely designed with a distinctive physical shape. This is especially true in the driver’s area but also includes the central section.

Secondly, when activated, Porsche's modern gauge clusters are clean, easy to read, and visually appealing without being dull or irritating. Many other vehicles fall into one of these less desirable categories.

      It’s really that straightforward.

I won’t go so far as to call the Porsche Taycan’s gauge cluster flawless—there are a few adjustments I’d suggest and alternate information layouts I would prefer. Nevertheless, among the numerous new cars I've driven in recent years, this one showcased the best screen-based gauge arrangement I've encountered.

Now that you have my main argument, I'll elaborate a bit for those who aren't just scrolling down to the comments to dispute my views.

The gauge screen in the Porsche Taycan has an attractive shape that harmonizes well with the overall cockpit design. Specifically, it resembles the outline of a more conventional gauge cluster bezel—it’s somewhat akin to a wide kidney bean. This design makes the driver’s seat feel special, unlike a flat rectangular screen that turns a car’s interior into a cubicle-like environment.

The infotainment display, where navigation and entertainment controls are managed, only features square edges. However, it is so seamlessly integrated into the dashboard that when it is turned off (which can be easily controlled via a console button), it virtually vanishes from sight.

Outstanding interior design doesn’t have to be complicated, as the Taycan’s dashboard effectively demonstrates. Moreover, once again, simplicity triumphs on the screen.

In a Toyota Camry, switching modes requires enduring a seven-second display of the entire gauge cluster showing an image of the car with the word “SPORT.” Meanwhile, Mini provides theme songs for its drive modes. BMW, on the other hand, complicates even the speedometer with an overload of color variations and unnecessary decorative shapes.

The Taycan avoids such frivolous elements. Its cluster presents a clear, organized display of vital car data in high-contrast colors. It exudes class and sportiness, perfectly aligning with Porsche’s intended style.

I appreciate a touch of whimsy in both life and automotive design. However, sacrificing thoughtful physical cabin design in favor of extravagant digital display decorations, which seems to be a current trend, is neither sophisticated nor appealing.

I won't be fully satisfied until I see cars return to driver displays that possess genuine depth and motion. Still, my experience with the electric Porsche has sparked some optimism that screen interfaces can be crafted in a manner that feels intentional, thoughtful, and engaging without becoming cheesy or distracting.
