BMW's Electric Super Sedan Might Be Coming Sooner Than Anticipated | Carscoops
The iM3 will be marketed alongside the mechanically distinct ICE M3 and could potentially utilize up to four electric motors.
The new electric sedan will incorporate BMW’s newly created natural fiber composites.
The non-high-performance i3 variants will include the 40 xDrive, 50 xDrive, and M60 xDrive.
Currently, BMW plans for a seven-year production period for the electric i3 and iM3 models.
BMW’s forthcoming all-electric 3-Series, dubbed the i3 (which is not related to the unconventional 2013 hatchback of the same name), is scheduled for release next year. Recent insider information suggests that the range will be more extensive than initially anticipated, with multiple variants planned. Among these is the flagship iM3, a high-performance electric M3 that may exceed 700 horsepower.
While some car manufacturers are reassessing their EV strategies, BMW is fully committed. Reports indicate that production of the iM3 will commence in March 2027 and continue until October 2034. This information comes from BimmerPost user ‘ynguldyn,’ a reputable BMW insider known for reliable leaks.
In contrast to the current gasoline-powered M3, which is available in various versions such as the base model, M3 Performance, the inaugural M3 Touring, and M3 CS, only a single variant of the iM3 has been confirmed at this time.
Unfortunately, details about the powertrain remain unclear and may not be disclosed until several months after the car's release. It has been proposed that the iM3 could feature as many as four electric motors, facilitating advanced torque vectoring capabilities.
Additionally, the iM3 will be among the first production models from BMW to adopt the new natural fiber material. Announced recently, this natural fiber composite has been developed in collaboration with a Swiss company and is made from flax seeds. It aims to provide strength comparable to carbon fiber while producing 40% fewer CO2 emissions during production. This material could be utilized in the car's bucket seats and other interior elements. Standard features will also include a head-up display and a panoramic sunroof.
What About The Non-M i3s?
In addition to the iM3, the standard i3 range is projected to begin production in July 2026, running alongside the flagship model until October 2034. Several configurations are reportedly being considered, including i3 20, 40, 40 xDrive, 50, 50 xDrive, and M60 xDrive, with the M60 model set to debut in March 2027.
Although technical specifications are still undisclosed, potential key features might include similar multifunction seats from the 5-Series, a standard panoramic glass sunroof, an optional highway driving assistant, and a selection of 19-, 20-, and 21-inch wheels. The M60 xDrive is also expected to feature an adaptive M suspension, M brakes, an M steering wheel, and various sporty enhancements.
