Independent designers have envisioned renderings of a potential small pickup based on Toyota's new SUV.

On June 21, 2025, at 18:10, Thanos Pappas reported that Toyota is looking into a compact pickup that could compete with the Ford Maverick and Santa Cruz.

Two designers have created visual interpretations of what a RAV4-inspired pickup could look like.

Using a unibody design might make this compact pickup more affordable and resemble an SUV.

Toyota is seeking to innovate, and it’s not with another hybrid crossover. Company representatives have confirmed they are investigating the concept of a smaller, budget-friendly pickup to sit below the midsize Tacoma. The fully electric EPU concept introduced in 2023 is the closest we've come to a preview of this compact pickup, but it remains uncertain if Toyota will proceed with it.

In the realm of digital design, independent artists like Digimods Design and Theophilus Chin have imagined how this compact pickup might appear, drawing inspiration from the rugged 2026 RAV4 Adventure trim.

Starting with the RAV4 Adventure Trim

The Adventure trim stands out with its black front inserts, boxy bumper, larger grille, additional intakes, and bolder skid plate, which make it more fitting for a pickup compared to the standard or GR-Sport versions of the RAV4. However, Digimods and Chin had different interpretations for the body design.

Digimods chose a traditional approach, merging the front of the RAV4 with the Tacoma's ladder-frame chassis and a standard rear bed. He added character by incorporating horizontally mounted taillights from the RAV4 into the tailgate, although this is somewhat unconventional.

Conversely, Chin took a completely different route. His design envisages a unibody truck incorporating elements from the RAV4 but featuring a longer wheelbase and extended rear. He opted for vertically stacked LED taillights, a plastic bumper with integrated steps, and a prominent tailgate emblazoned with RAV4 lettering. It presents a more car-like interpretation of a truck, yet retains its appeal.

Is the Unibody Approach More Feasible?

The unibody compact truck concept may actually be a more plausible option. If Toyota pursues this design, it could compete against models like the Ford Maverick, which features unibody construction, and the Hyundai Santa Cruz.

While a unibody may not offer the same towing and cargo capabilities as a traditional ladder-frame truck, it could be sufficient for individuals with active lifestyles or small businesses that don't require the full features of a heavy-duty work vehicle. Moreover, it could still be equipped with an enhanced suspension to provide added ruggedness.

Toyota's RAV4 is built on the TNGA-K platform, which it shares with the larger Crown Signia, Highlander, and Grand Highlander SUVs. This platform accommodates hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and gasoline engines, with the most powerful RAV4 PHEV providing a respectable 320 horsepower (238 kW / 324 PS).

Though this power would be ample for a compact truck, the vehicle's size and less aerodynamic design might reduce range, particularly if Toyota opts for electric features.

      What’s the Alternative?

What if Toyota chooses a more traditional route? Some reports suggest that the compact truck could be designed with a rugged ladder-frame chassis, similar to the Hilux. This version would likely deliver superior off-road performance, akin to the FJ Cruiser of the past, appealing to a different demographic than those interested in a more SUV-like truck. If Toyota aims to produce a true off-road contender, this approach may be preferable.

Would you prefer a pickup version of the RAV4, or would you rather see Toyota revive the spirit of the FJ Cruiser with something more rugged and off-road capable?
