A high-performance version of the upcoming BMW iX5 electric SUV has been spotted undergoing testing in Germany.
This SUV resembles an iX5 M70, which could compete against the Lotus Eletre and Porsche Cayenne Electric.
BMW has opted to retain the CLAR platform for the X5 instead of transitioning to the Neue Klasse architecture.
Regardless of opinions, BMW M's top-selling model is now an EV, the i4 M50, which has recently been upgraded to the i4 M60. There are many more electric models on the horizon, including a fully electric M3 and this powerful electric SUV.
The significant drilled brake discs and large wheels indicate that we’re observing a performance variant of the forthcoming iX5, BMW’s first electric X5. Based on the brand's current naming conventions, it is likely called the iX5 M70.
The 23-inch, five-spoke forged rims are fitted with Michelin tires rated for speeds exceeding 150 mph (240 km/h), and we believe the M70 will surpass that speed unless BMW imposes restrictions. It is likely powered by the same dual-motor setup currently used in the i7 M70, which produces 650 hp (659 PS / 485 kW) and can propel the sedan to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.7 seconds. We hope BMW can apply its latest battery technology to enhance the i7 M70's range, which the EPA estimates at only 268-285 miles (431-459 km).
Similar to the i7, the new iX5, which will also come in a combustion version, is based on an updated iteration of the existing CLAR architecture. This represents a significant distinction between the X5/iX5 and the X3/iX3; while the smaller SUV’s combustion variant is CLAR-based, the iX3 transitions to BMW’s Neue Klasse platform.
Despite not being based on the Neue Klasse, the X5 will still present an appealing design, incorporating stylistic elements from the iX3, which was previewed by last year's Vision Neue Klasse X concept, including a visor-like front-end. The images suggest that the project is still in relatively early development, as the lights are not final and there are some riveted panels on the body along with heavy camouflage on the bumpers.
The iX5 and this M70 version are expected to launch next year, ready to compete against Porsche’s inaugural Cayenne Electric and challenge existing electric SUVs like the Lotus Eletre. The positive aspect for combustion enthusiasts is that both BMW and Porsche will also offer internal combustion engine variants, and even Lotus is developing a hybrid version of the Eletre in response to a decrease in luxury EV adoption and high tariffs.
