Rearview Mirrors Could Detach from These Luxury Mercedes and Maybach SUVs | Carscoops
Mercedes has identified that the adhesive used for the mirrors did not meet their quality standards.
The affected models include the Mercedes GLE, GLS, and select Maybach variants. Mercedes-Benz has attributed the issue to a supplier based in the U.S. who provided the inadequate adhesive.
When investing a significant amount in a luxury vehicle, consumers expect not just the brand but also impeccable assembly quality. Thus, it's quite surprising for something as fundamental as a rearview mirror to become a point of concern. This is exactly the situation with a recent recall involving a few Mercedes-Benz and Maybach models in the U.S.
The problem arises from the adhesive used to attach the rearview mirror to the windshield in 26 vehicles nationwide.
As stated by the company, the adhesive did not align with their internal standards, which could lead to the mirror loosening, partially detaching, or possibly falling completely off. While this might be excusable for an older vehicle in poor condition, it certainly doesn’t instill confidence in new 2024 or 2025 Mercedes models.
A Minor Component with Major Implications
If the rearview mirror were to fall off, it wouldn’t just obstruct the driver's view out of the back window. It also encompasses a multi-function camera and other sensors critical for the vehicle's driver assistance systems. If these systems malfunction, the risk of an accident could increase.
Mercedes has indicated that one of its suppliers, AGC Automotive Americas Co. in Michigan, is responsible for the issue. A production deviation was found to be the reason the adhesive joints lacked the necessary retention forces to meet the automaker's requirements.
Vehicles manufactured between June 5, 2024, and October 12, 2024, are affected, including the 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 and 63 S models, the 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLS 53 SUV and Coupes, the 2025 Maybach GLS 600, along with the 2025 GLE 450 4Matic, GLE 450 4Matic Coupe, and GLE 450e 4Matic models. Additionally, one 2024 GLE 350 4Matic is also included in the recall.
So far, Mercedes has reported no warranty claims, field reports, or customer complaints related to this issue. Dealers have been directed to replace the windshields and reinstall both the rearview mirrors and the integrated camera systems in the affected vehicles.
