The third-generation Leaf showcases additional design elements and features ahead of its official global launch.

Transformed into a crossover, the latest Leaf becomes Nissan's most aerodynamic vehicle to date.

Nissan is also promising a spacious cabin with a potential driving range of up to 311 miles.

Electric vehicles are advancing rapidly, and Nissan aims for the new Leaf to remain relevant in the market. The company is gearing up for the official unveiling of its next-gen electric vehicle later this month, offering glimpses of its design and insights into its development through a series of new videos.

Nissan first unveiled the third-generation Leaf in March 2025, shifting from the traditional hatchback design of previous iterations to a crossover appearance that features a fastback-style rear. We now have a detailed view of important design aspects, including LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, and an active grille shutter that optimizes airflow.

Additionally, the Leaf will include a NACS-compatible charging port and an optional panoramic roof equipped with an e-Dimming feature. This functionality employs electrochromic technology and an infrared reflective coating, negating the need for a physical sunshade.

As stated by Nissan's design director, Nobutaka Tase, this Leaf is designed to be the most aerodynamic production model ever created by the company, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.25 in Europe and 0.26 in the US and Japan. The slight variation is due to region-specific modifications such as wheels and mirror designs, with the European version being slightly more streamlined.

      Shared Platform, Promised Range

Underneath, the Leaf utilizes the CMF-EV platform shared with the larger Ariya, allowing for a flat floor and a more spacious interior. While exact specifications have yet to be revealed, Nissan has confirmed it will feature a single-motor setup without an all-wheel-drive option, targeting a driving range exceeding 300 miles (482 km).

Richard Candler, Nissan’s vice president of global product strategy, mentions that the objective was to make the new Leaf appealing to buyers accustomed to gasoline-powered vehicles. This required a sleek design without sacrificing practicality and ensuring that long-distance driving capabilities were incorporated. The target range varies from 300 to 500 kilometers (186 to 311 miles), with the capability to add about 200 kilometers (124 miles) of range in just 40 minutes of charging.

To date, Nissan has sold nearly 700,000 units of the Leaf since its launch in 2010, drawing valuable feedback from current owners for the development of this new generation. More information will be available at the full reveal on June 18.
