China’s MITT has disclosed further details about the forthcoming Volvo XC70 plug-in hybrid.
This crossover will be equipped with a 1.5-liter engine, offering two battery options for consumers.
It is set to launch later this year and will provide an electric range of 124 miles.
Earlier this month, Volvo teased the XC70, and now China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has unveiled the model, along with several specifications. While it's expected that the crossover will debut in China later this year, Volvo is considering the possibility of releasing the vehicle in other regions.
In terms of design, the XC70 takes inspiration from the EX90, showcasing sleek styling and sculpted bodywork. Although it is an extended-range plug-in hybrid, it features a fully enclosed grille resembling that of an electric vehicle. However, it has a large lower intake and an active grille shutter system that adjusts automatically to enhance cooling and aerodynamics.
The 'grille' is accompanied by Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights positioned above stacked Matrix LED headlights. A notable sensor and a metallic strip that wraps around the vehicle are also visible.
On the sides, the XC70 features flush door handles and aerodynamic wheels that range from 19 to 21 inches. It also includes plastic body cladding, a fixed panoramic glass roof, and vertical taillights that extend into the liftgate. Additional elements include a minimalist spoiler and a relatively simple rear bumper.
The XC70 measures 189.6 inches (4,815 mm) in length, 74.4 inches (1,890 mm) in width, and 65 inches (1,650 mm) in height, with a wheelbase of 114 inches (2,895 mm). This makes it 5.4 inches (137 mm) shorter than the XC90, with a wheelbase that is 3.5 inches (89 mm) smaller.
Details regarding the powertrain are limited, but the XC70 will feature a 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) 1.5-liter engine, with buyers having the option of lithium iron phosphate or ternary lithium-ion batteries. The crossover is expected to weigh 5,600 lbs (2,540 kg) and achieve a top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).
While this may not seem particularly exhilarating, Volvo has previously stated that the XC70 was created to "meet the demand for longer-range plug-in hybrids in China." To support this aim, it utilizes the SMA platform, providing an electric-only range of up to 124 miles (200 km).
