A Renault R5 Turbo 2 featuring a Rotary engine has been posted on Bring A Trailer. This marks the third time it has appeared on the site since 2021. Previously, the seller declined an offer of $110,000.
You don't need to be deeply immersed in car culture to admire a rally car designed for the road, with its striking proportions and an engine located where one would typically store groceries. However, for those who are passionate about cars, the Renault R5 Turbo 2 hardly requires an introduction.
Emerging from homologation regulations and designed for drifting through European woodlands, this hot hatch was not originally intended to be a race car, yet it transformed into one of the most sought-after performance vehicles of its time. Now, one of the more unique models is back on the market—once again, for the third time, in fact.
Rotary Engine, Renault Foundations
This specific vehicle was originally brought to California and spent most of its life with the original engine intact. Then in 2007, the owner at that time replaced the four-cylinder turbo engine with a turbocharged Mazda B13 Rotary engine. While the exact horsepower is unknown, it likely ranges from 215 to 250 horsepower (160-186 kW). Currently, with an upgraded turbo, it’s even more difficult to determine its power output.
What truly matters is that the car comes equipped with a modified bell housing that retains its original Renault running gear. This setup allows the future owner to manually shift gears using a five-speed manual transmission and enjoy rear-wheel drive. Additionally, the wide-bodied hot hatch includes all the necessary components to return it to its original specifications.
Indeed, the original engine and additional parts are included with the vehicle. Does this make it worthwhile to purchase? Only the final bid will reveal that. If the trend of the previous auctions continues, it may turn out to be more of a failure than a success.
Three Auctions, No Sales
Perhaps the most peculiar aspect of this situation is that this car has been auctioned three times since 2021. During the first auction, it did not sell, reaching a high bid of $78,500 with 21,000 miles on the odometer. The current owner acquired it later that same year and then listed it again in January of this year with the same mileage.
For reasons unknown, they rejected a high bid of $110,000. Now, they are back in the running, still with the same mileage, possibly hoping for a higher offer. While it is true that some cars are commanding high prices, even with the market significantly cooler than in previous years, it will be intriguing to see if this auction exceeds $110,000 or falls short.
