Tesla's Model S Plaid Facelift Is Different from What You Anticipated | Carscoops
The high-performance electric sedan has been spotted at the Nurburgring with a new bumper and rear diffuser, but there appear to be few other changes.
Tesla is conducting tests on a refreshed Model S Plaid sedan at the Nurburgring, aiming for subtle aerodynamic improvements to enhance downforce.
Additionally, Tesla was also seen testing a Model Y Performance during this track session.
Recently, Tesla’s engineers have been active at the Nurburgring, not only focusing on the Model Y Performance but also revealing the updated version of the Model S Plaid, which was observed making several laps around the track. The updates feature a fresh appearance that, to be honest, doesn't seem particularly revolutionary.
The Plaid used to hold the title of the fastest electric production car at the ’Ring, but it has recently been outdone by both the Weissach Pack-equipped Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and Xiaomi’s new SU7 Ultra. Tesla is unlikely to accept this loss without a fight, and they are testing an updated Plaid expected to deliver significant improvements beyond the current model’s 1,006 hp (1,020 PS / 750 kW) triple-motor powertrain.
The black sedan was seen performing hot laps while donning a bikini camouflage wrap on its front and rear, although the alterations appear so minimal that it almost seems pointless to hide them. If you were anticipating significant visual changes for the aging sedan, akin to the Model Y Juniper facelift depicted in previous renderings, you may end up disappointed.
The only noticeable update at the front seems to be a small lower lip spoiler positioned beneath the current bumper. The headlights, daytime running light designs, and the bumper itself look virtually identical to those on the existing model. This means the new Plaid retains the same basic front design first introduced during the 2013 Model S refresh for 2017, although some detail modifications were made in 2021 to compete with Porsche’s newer Taycan.
On the track, the vehicle featured a new design of alloy wheels that appear larger than the standard Plaid rims captured in images of the car commuting to and from the circuit. This could potentially provide the Plaid with a larger footprint to enhance grip and traction, and to better maintain tire contact with the road, Tesla has also incorporated a more aggressive diffuser beneath the rear bumper.
Tesla’s VP of Engineering, Lars Moravy, has more or less confirmed that a refreshed Model S will be launched this year. While an all-new vehicle wasn’t anticipated—though after 13 years one would be warranted—there were hopes for more substantial changes than it seems Tesla will be offering.
