A dump truck in Florida crashed into an overpass, causing the bed of the truck to detach.
Fortunately, both the driver and the passenger of the vehicle were unharmed.
Authorities closed the highway to facilitate the removal of the truck’s damaged bed.
I'm not a truck driver, but I would hope that if I were operating a dump truck, I would notice if the bed was raised before hitting the road. However, last week in Florida, a dump truck driver appeared completely oblivious to the elevated bed until he crashed into the Interstate 10 overpass.
A 54-year-old man was driving the truck. Not only did he fail to realize that the bed was elevated, but his passenger also seemed to overlook it. They struck the underside of the Interstate 10 overpass at State Road 285 around 2:20 a.m.
There’s no information on how fast the truck was going at the time, but the speed limit on that stretch of road is 55 mph. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the bed made contact with the overpass with such intensity that it was torn off the truck’s frame. It remains uncertain if the truck can be repaired, but if it can, it will likely be costly.
Neither the truck driver nor his passenger suffered injuries in the incident. Thankfully, no other drivers were involved in this embarrassing situation, which could have easily resulted in a multi-vehicle accident during busier times.
The incident caused some disruption, leading police to close the affected section of highway while the truck’s bed was taken away, as reported by Fox 10 TV.
Accidents like this occur all too frequently, not just in the U.S., but globally. One of the most notorious overpasses in the nation is the '11foot8+8' bridge in North Carolina. Over the years, hundreds of vehicles have collided with this bridge in Durham, despite local officials raising the original height from 11 feet 8 inches to 12 feet 4 inches.
