Xiaomi asserted that the new hood would enhance cooling for the flagship SU7 Ultra, but independent assessments have indicated that the vents on the hood are largely for show. Over 300 owners have united in their demand for full refunds.

Owners of the Xiaomi SU7 have enthusiastically expressed their excitement for the innovative electric vehicle, yet they have also been quick to voice their concerns when issues arise. Recently, there has been considerable backlash regarding a software update that significantly reduced the SU7 Ultra’s peak power from 1,526 horsepower to a more modest 888 hp. The latest frustration revolves around the optional carbon fiber hood.

This new carbon fiber hood is priced at 42,000 yuan, approximately $5,800, and draws its design inspiration from the hood of the original SU7 Ultra prototype. It features large air ducts that Xiaomi claims improve cooling; however, a number of Chinese automotive bloggers tested the hood and discovered that it offers virtually no increase in airflow, indicating that it is mostly a cosmetic addition rather than a real performance enhancement.

According to CarNewsChina, one blogger performed a simple experiment by placing a piece of paper near the vents and using a fan at the front of the vehicle. The result showed that the paper remained completely still, demonstrating the lack of cooling benefits. This revelation is somewhat embarrassing for Xiaomi.

The Chinese automaker acted swiftly to tackle the issue by issuing an apology, explaining that the hood was mainly designed to replicate the aesthetic of the prototype's hood. Additionally, Xiaomi acknowledged that offering the carbon fiber hood was not part of the original production model development plan.

To appease unhappy customers, the company announced that those with pending orders could opt for the standard aluminum hood instead. For those who had already received their vehicles with the carbon fiber hood, Xiaomi promised 20,000 reward points, equivalent to approximately 2,000 yuan or around $275 at current exchange rates.

This gesture, understandably, has not fully satisfied everyone. Reports indicate that as many as 300 owners have come together to demand total vehicle refunds, feeling that the promised upgrade amounted to little more than an overpriced piece of carbon fiber without substantial benefits.

While Xiaomi has created an impressive performance sedan with the SU7 Ultra, it appears that its marketing team needs to enhance its communication, since any misstep or excessive hyperbole could lead to repercussions.
