Alfa Romeo May Astonish Enthusiasts With a Sports Car Based on Dodge Charger Foundations | Carscoops
Described as a dream, the sports car will have to be postponed until the company stabilizes.
An official from Alfa Romeo hinted at the potential arrival of a premium sports car in the near future. This model may debut after the brand introduces the new Giulia and Stelvio. There are speculations that it could be developed on the STLA Large platform and compete with the M4.
Alfa Romeo enthusiasts have had little to celebrate recently, as the brand has struggled with its sports car offerings. The Fiat 124 Spider was initially intended to be an Alfa, while the 4C reportedly sold fewer than 10,000 units. The company also revealed intentions for a new GTV and 8C, only to cancel both about a year later.
Despite the introduction of the new supercar, the 33 Stradale, which is produced by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera and limited to just 33 units, this model is based on the Maserati MC20 and is said to have a price tag around $1 million, likely to remain in collectors' garages for most of its lifespan.
However, it seems Alfa Romeo hasn't overlooked the idea of more accessible sports cars. In a conversation with Car Magazine, the company's marketing executive stated, “Anyone at Alfa Romeo will tell you that we’d love to have another performance-oriented car.” Nonetheless, Cristiano Fiorio emphasized the need for the company to "deliver" results before pursuing “dreams.”
He elaborated that, being a relatively small brand, they lack the resources that companies like Audi, Mercedes, and Porsche have. Thus, they are concentrating on solidifying their fundamentals before venturing into products that might create more excitement than actual sales.
Fiorio remarked, “Releasing one model each year, and demonstrating our ability to execute, ensure profitability, and produce acceptable numbers for our investments is essential. Once we establish a solid track record, then we can dream.” Essentially, the focus must be on core models such as the next-generation Giulia and Stelvio before taking risks.
When the sports car eventually arrives, it may not necessarily be a two-seater. The publication indicates it could be based on the STLA Large platform, which supports the Dodge Charger, suggesting it may be a coupe competing against the BMW M4 and Mercedes-AMG CLE 53. This certainly evokes memories of the previously canceled GTV, yet only time will reveal the outcome.
Interestingly, Fiorio mentioned that the 33 Stradale was greenlighted as it was an after-hours initiative that did not interfere with other projects. He further noted that if complications had arisen, officials would have dismissed it, stating, ‘f*ck off. You are not going to do that.’
