Aston Martin DBX S Employs Valhalla Techniques to Offer 717 Justifications for Choosing It Over Ferrari's SUV | Carscoops
The first S-badged SUV from Aston Martin receives an additional 20 hp compared to the DBX 707 and sheds 100 lbs of curb weight.
Aston Martin's latest model, the DBX S, takes some inspiration from the Valhalla supercar. The 4.0-liter bi-turbo AMG engine features larger turbos and an increase in power to 717 hp. A new exhaust system enhances the V8's sound, and the SUV now boasts quicker steering.
Aston Martin appears to be rapidly unveiling new models, with the DBX S being the latest iteration. It stands as the fastest SUV to date, claiming to incorporate technologies from the Valhalla supercar.
The S is Aston's answer to competitors like the Ferrari Purosangue and Lamborghini Urus SE, which made the DBX 707 seem somewhat less powerful. Unlike the Ferrari’s V12 or the Lamborghini’s hybrid support, the DBX S uses a refined version of the existing V8 engine, along with some chassis enhancements and a notable reduction in weight.
Equipped with larger turbos from the Valhalla, the power output reaches 717 hp (727 PS), which is 20 hp (20 PS) more than the DBX 707, and 2 hp (2 PS) above the Purosangue, but still trailing the Urus SE's 789 hp (800 PS).
Aston asserts that the 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration time remains at 3.3 seconds, but the DBX S is 0.3 seconds quicker to reach 124 mph (200 km/h) compared to the 707. A revised exhaust system promises a more appealing sound for onlookers as the car passes, enhancing the aural experience of the AMG-derived 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine.
The new exhaust features a stacked design at the rear, similar to that of the forthcoming DB12 AMR. Additional styling updates include a fresh black grille, redesigned front and rear bumpers, and larger side skirts. Aston claims these modifications improve airflow while also providing the DBX S with a striking appearance.
Inside, the vehicle receives a performance-inspired makeover with herringbone-patterned seats, a design echoed on the headlining if the optional 40-lb lighter (18 kg) carbon roof is chosen, among various weight-saving options. These include 23-inch magnesium wheels that save 42 lbs (19 kg), carbon sills, bumpers, and a unique polycarbonate grille.
Choosing all the lightweight features results in a DBX S that weighs 104 lbs (47 kg) less than the 4,950 lbs (2,245 kg) DBX 707, with Aston also enhancing responsiveness through a 4 percent quicker steering rack.
Pricing details haven’t been revealed yet, but anticipate a significant increase over the $256,086 DBX 707, which is currently the only other model in the DBX lineup. Would you prefer the DBX S over the Urus SE or the Purosangue?
