Which Electric Vehicle Will Become a Highly Desired Collectible in 20 Years? | Carscoops
Electric vehicles have significantly progressed since their inception, and some contemporary models may eventually become sought-after collectibles.
Certain EVs, including hypercars like the Rimac Nevera and everyday electric vehicles, could gain collectible status over the years. This could apply to various models, ranging from the Nissan Leaf to the Porsche Taycan.
It's surprising to note that more than a century has passed since electric vehicles first appeared on our roads. They may have faded from view shortly after their introduction, but they are now making a remarkable resurgence. In the last ten years, EVs have advanced tremendously, leading us to ponder which of today's electric vehicles might be regarded as collectibles two decades down the line.
To clarify, there are a few historic and rare EVs that have already established themselves in the collectibles sphere. For example, Jay Leno owns a 1909 Baker Electric that he has even customized. However, the broader electric vehicle market is not yet widely recognized as a treasure chest for collectors. But who knows? The next generation of electric cars might alter that perception.
A notable example that could be considered collectible is the original Tesla Roadster 2.5, which was instrumental in launching Elon Musk's brand. While it has its drawbacks, such as range issues and varying build quality, the Roadster was truly ahead of its era. It was crucial in igniting the EV revolution, without which the Model S and the entire Tesla brand might not have materialized. Though not flawless, it was certainly a transformative vehicle.
Speaking of Tesla, we should also consider other potential collectibles. The Model S, for instance, completely redefined expectations for electric vehicles.
The Model Y, Tesla's best-selling model, has perhaps been the most influential in encouraging global EV adoption. Additionally, the Cybertruck is noteworthy; regardless of opinions on its design, it stands out in a market filled with similar-looking vehicles.
However, Tesla isn't the only player in the game. The Nissan Leaf played a significant role in influencing the electric vehicle landscape, particularly for those looking for economical choices. The Rivian R1T marked the debut of the all-electric pickup truck, while the original Porsche Taycan showed that even legendary brands were willing to move away from traditional combustion engines.
If I had to choose a personal favorite, it would be the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. It appears on track to become the first EV that truly combines high driver engagement with supercar-like performance. Historically, such features rarely coexist in an EV that is accessible to the average consumer, which makes the 5 N unique.
While some traditional car enthusiasts might doubt electric cars ever becoming collectibles, it's important to recognize that a new generation is emerging. This group is likely to have grown up with electric vehicles as the norm and won’t carry the same prejudices against them.
