In recent years, companies such as Polaris, Vanderhall, and Morgan have made significant efforts to revitalize the three-wheeler market. Based in Idaho, Grind Hard Plumbing has taken on the challenge of creating something more exciting than the factory-made three-wheelers. Their creation is a massive, monster truck-inspired tricycle equipped with a ride-in tractor wheel and several other outrageous features, and it also incorporates three-wheel steering for added fun.
Rather than modifying an existing three-wheeler, Grind Hard Plumbing began this project from the ground up. The rear subframe is sourced from a Humvee that happened to be on hand, the engine is a four-cylinder turbodiesel TDI from Volkswagen, and the rear wheels are fitted with enormous 46-inch tires. However, the standout feature at the front is a 54-inch steel wheel originally designed for a tractor, which will house the driver’s seat and various controls. Achieving this design involved significant metal cutting.
The trike's framework consists of a tubular structure that imparts the sort of homemade, post-apocalyptic feel that one might expect from a vehicle intended for a zombie-themed TV show. The assembly, piece by piece and weld by weld, comes together quite impressively.
In their latest episode, Grind Hard Plumbing focuses on the steering and suspension systems. Their aim is to equip the trike with three-wheel steering that operates in both directions. The front wheel must be able to turn opposite to the rear wheels for a tighter turning radius, and all three wheels should have the capability to turn simultaneously for a crab walk feature. This vehicle is designed to handle extremely challenging off-road conditions.
Things are about to get even more interesting: The ability to steer with three wheels will enable the driver to be positioned at either end of the trike.
With the rear steering temporarily connected, Grind Hard Plumbing will now work on completing the rear suspension system, constructing the front steering system, and tying the three wheels together. While there is no clear timeline for project completion, it promises to be a worthwhile wait. “The driving experience will be the most unconventional of anything we’ve ever built,” the shop stated.
