Porsche is rejecting a report that claims it has ceased shipping new vehicles to the US for several weeks.
After the implementation of Trump’s tariffs, automakers have been trying to safeguard their sales while maintaining their businesses. Some manufacturers committed to producing cars domestically for the US market, while others halted shipments completely.
Porsche was reportedly one of those companies that stopped shipments, but the firm firmly denies these claims.
It is well-known that automakers are in a critical situation as they navigate the ramifications of the US President’s sweeping tariffs, and Porsche appears to be caught in this dilemma. A recent report suggested that Porsche dealers have not received deliveries of new vehicles from US ports for several weeks. However, a spokesperson for Porsche North America indicated that this information is inaccurate.
“We are challenging this article, as cars are being shipped from our ports to dealers,” a Porsche representative told Carscoops. “In fact, a significant number of cars were delivered to our US sites in April alone.”
This contradicts an Autonews report that interviewed several dealers who stated that Porsche, similar to its Audi counterpart in the VW Group, has stopped delivering new vehicles. “They are not releasing the vehicles to us,” commented one dealer who preferred to remain anonymous. “I believe Porsche is waiting for the administration to settle on a realistic tariff number.”
Another dealer mentioned that “everything is being held,” while a third added, “We’re fine for now. The inventory we have will last us through May.” By that time, Porsche’s dealers are hopeful that negotiations between the VW Group and the Trump administration will lead to a favorable outcome that preserves their business.
Porsche’s Exposure to Tariff Effects
Porsche stands to lose significantly from Trump’s policies since all the vehicles it sells are imported from Europe. Unlike Audi, the company does not plan to establish a US manufacturing plant, as its low production volume does not justify the substantial costs involved.
The reason Porsche dealers have sufficient inventory for at least one more month stems from the company’s preemptive shipment of additional vehicles to the US prior to the tariffs being enacted. They have maintained consistent pricing for customers who placed orders in March. This information was reportedly communicated by company executives to investors and analysts in April.
Prioritizing Customer Relations for Now
Regardless of the situation, Porsche’s decision not to make any announcements at this time seems prudent. This is reflected in customer comments on Rennlist: “I have a Spyder 4RS on the way, and if they try to raise the price when it arrives, I’ll tell them to go (explicit) themselves. But I honestly can’t see that happening with orders already placed,” stated one user.
It appears that even though many Porsche customers likely have other vehicles in their garages and can afford to wait a few months for a resolution, not all are willing to pay more than they initially agreed to.
Porsche directly addressed the situation in a letter to its North American dealers, outlining its approach to managing the impact of the tariffs and reassuring them about the measures in place to protect customers. The letter, which was also shared on Rennlist, stated:
“Porsche is thoughtfully reviewing the recent Auto Tariff Executive Order and its ramifications, prioritizing our customers. In the short term, we have taken substantial steps to ensure a healthy supply of vehicles that are not affected by tariffs. In some cases, customers with orders may have the option to immediately purchase a vehicle from an existing stock that remains unaffected by tariffs. Customers who wish to maintain their orders or place new ones will receive updates as Porsche implements a concrete plan to adapt to the newly established policies.”
We have reached out to Porsche regarding potential price increases for both vehicles already ordered and those currently in transit or at port, as well as for future deliveries. So far, we have not received a response.
