This new model could potentially be a rebadged edition of the Dacia Bigster.
Renault has announced that its upcoming C-segment SUV, called the Boreal, will be unveiled in the coming months. It is planned to be launched in more than 70 markets outside of Europe, with Brazil being the first market.
Promoted as a key component of Renault's International Game Plan 2027, the Boreal follows the Kardian, which was launched in late 2023. While the company has not disclosed extensive details about the model yet, they mentioned that it reflects the brand’s renewed global ambitions and their move towards a more premium market positioning.
The debut is expected to occur in Brazil, and Renault has carefully considered the name of the crossover. They explained that "Boreal" comes from boreas, the Greek god of the wind, and also translates to "north wind" in Latin.
According to Sylvia dos Santos, Renault’s Naming Strategy Manager, the name Boreal is appropriate for an SUV as it connotes strength and a design that enhances status. She also noted its association with the aurora borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights.
Ultimately, the company stated that the name “perfectly embodies the values represented by the SUV: technology, status, and comfort.” They added that the Boreal is “unprecedented in the lineup” and encourages exploration and the discovery of new horizons.
Despite the marketing flair, there are rumors suggesting that the Boreal might be a rebadged version of the Dacia Bigster. This wouldn’t be surprising, considering the Kardian was a slightly modified version of the Dacia Sandero.
If this is indeed the case, we can anticipate the Boreal to be an economical crossover featuring a rugged design and a minimalist interior equipped with a 10.1-inch infotainment system, along with a 7- or 10-inch digital instrument cluster. The European variant is also expected to offer a range of engines, from a 1.2-liter three-cylinder mild hybrid with 128 hp (96 kW / 130 PS) to a full hybrid with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 153 hp (115 kW / 155 PS).
