What If Mazda Created an Inline-Six Sports Wagon Based on the EZ-6? | Carscoops

      We imagine a 400hp six-cylinder Mazda6 successor that could compete with BMW’s M340i Touring.

Our concept is based on the new Mazda EZ-6/6e, featuring an extended wheelbase and wagon design.

The centerpiece would be Mazda’s 3.3-litre straight-six mild hybrid engine, known as Skyactiv Z.

There could also be a battery-electric version and a range-extender EV available.

Recall the persistent rumors that Mazda might actually produce a rear-drive sedan with an inline six to rival the BMW 3 Series? Ultimately, that never materialized. Instead, the EZ-6/6e was released in the Chinese and European markets, a Deepal-based liftback with both EV and extended-range electric (EREV) powertrains. It’s nice, but still not the Mazda6 replacement we all wanted.

However, that doesn’t prevent us from dreaming. Here's a glimpse of what could have been if Mazda opted to create a new mid-size wagon. We’ve taken the EZ-6, extended its wheelbase, raised the roof, and, of course, included an inline six. Interested? Read on to discover what could have made perfect sense.

A Fresh Perspective on the EZ-6

As many have observed since its launch, the EZ-6 is built on Changan’s Deepal SL7, resulting in an attractive liftback sedan with some proportional oddities, particularly at the rear.

So, what are these oddities? The back end appears somewhat... top-heavy, with substantial D-pillars and a tailgate that seems overly prominent. The proportions convey a “front-wheel drive” vibe, even though it's technically rear-wheel drive—certainly not ideal.

Our illustrative study addresses these aesthetic issues with a longer axle-to-dash ratio (helping accommodate that hypothetical inline six) and a rear bumper that's more upright rather than tapering inward. The rear quarter glass slopes down toward the back, yet the roofline is designed to maintain the wagon’s functionality.

You’ll also notice the bodywork appears different; we've incorporated a more pronounced shoulder line and rear haunches to give it a wide, stable look—contrasting with the upright (and often awkward) appearance many EVs have due to the battery pack positioned in the floor.

The interior? We’d retain most of the current design while introducing a few modern enhancements. Imagine a curved OLED instrument cluster and infotainment screen similar to Cadillac’s, plus more physical buttons for essential functions. No one wants to struggle with touch controls at 60 mph. The new, longer dimensions would enhance cargo capacity to a commendable 600 liters (21 cubic feet). It’s practical and stylish, essentially what one would expect from a Mazda wagon.

      Performance: Inline-Six, Yes, Please

For performance, our proposal’s highlight would be Mazda’s latest version of the 48-volt mild hybrid 3.3-litre straight-six, known as SkyActiv-Z.

Currently, this turbocharged six-cylinder engine reaches a maximum output of 340 hp in the CX-90 (though some piggyback tunes are approaching 390 hp), and further refinements could push it past the 400 horsepower threshold (294 kW). Power would be distributed to all four wheels through a modified 8-speed automatic transmission.

Both EV and range-extended options would carry over from the EZ-6, albeit with enhancements to the 80kWh EV version that currently produces 241 hp (180 kW). This could be upgraded to 295 hp (220 kW), improving its competitiveness with Tesla’s Model 3.

      Potential Competitors

So, who would compete with this dream vehicle? Let’s consider some major players: BMW’s M340i xDrive Touring, Audi’s S5 Avant, and Mercedes-AMG’s C43 Estate. All are incredibly fast, filled with premium features, and, let’s be honest, stem from lineages that Mazda isn’t typically recognized for (yet).

Still, the Japanese automaker possesses the capability to develop a vehicle that challenges those established perceptions. All they need to do is take action and bring it to fruition.
