In New York, there are several “super-scofflaws” who owe over $200,000 in unpaid tickets to the state.

A driver of an Audi A6 in NYC amassed 563 tickets in 2024, amounting to fines of $58,149.57.

Most of these infractions are captured by cameras, allowing drivers to avoid license points.

Speed cameras, red light cameras, and even noise cameras are prevalent in New York City; they are almost as common as overpriced coffee shops now. Last year, these cameras issued thousands of tickets, and notably, over 500 fines were assigned to a single driver, who has incurred more than $50,000 in fines in recent years.

And this isn’t just an anomaly. Many drivers appear to believe that traffic regulations do not apply to them, and the city’s cameras do little to change that behavior.

NYC's StreetsBlog analyzed publicly accessible data, including details from How’s My Driving NY, to evaluate the effectiveness of the city’s camera systems and to assess the level of danger on the streets. It seems that the level of risk is often indicated by the number of violations being committed. By this standard, the mentioned Audi A6 driver stands out as the most egregious offender.

      New York’s Most Notorious Driver

In 2024, this driver amassed a remarkable 563 violations, the majority for speeding, with a concerning 626 offenses recorded in school zones from December 2023 to November 2024. Additionally, there were tickets for driving in a bus lane and for running red lights. Notably, as reported by Jalopnik, this same Audi A6 driver received 7 speeding tickets in just one day, totaling $350 in fines.

That's an average of 1.54 tickets daily, with each violation carrying a minimum fine of $50. Overall, the Audi A6 driver has accrued $58,149.57 in fines, of which $46,636.60 has been settled.

This issue extends beyond just one individual. Another driver, operating a Mercedes-Benz, received 474 tickets last year and currently owes the state $47,858.17 in unpaid fines. According to the findings, many of these super-scofflaws tend to disregard the fines rather than pay them, as they do not come from an NYPD officer and therefore do not incur points. This situation allows these drivers to continue operating their vehicles until the state takes more significant action.

“These results highlight a small group with a disturbing pattern of repeat offenses, indifference to conventional deterrents, and a lack of regard for human life,” stated Transportation Authority Executive Director Ben Furnas. The pressing question remains: what measures will NYC take to curb this type of driving?

“Fortunately, we have a solution that could enhance safety for New Yorkers – a bill that would necessitate speed limiters in vehicles belonging to the most notorious repeat offenders. It is crucial for Albany to pass this legislation promptly to prevent the next fatal accident,” Furnas added. The bill, SB S7621, is still several steps away from becoming law.

In the meantime, it appears that New York’s super-speeders will continue to flout the rules, along with the safety of others on the road.
