New Lexus ES Takes On Global Flagship Role Amid Uncertain Future for LS | Carscoops

The existing ES model has been available since 2018, making its updated 2021 successor a logical next step.

Lexus has provided a teaser for the all-new ES ahead of its reveal in China as a new “global flagship.”

The sedan has undergone a complete redesign, featuring a more streamlined roofline and sharp LED lights.

The new ES will incorporate advanced electrification technologies and enhanced ride comfort.

Lexus is beginning to unveil the next-generation ES with an official teaser before its public introduction. The luxury sedan is set to debut on April 23 at the Shanghai Auto Show in China, with plans for a gradual introduction to other global markets, including Europe.

Notably, the upcoming ES is being presented as a “global flagship,” which may indicate a shift in Lexus’ lineup and could suggest the potential discontinuation of the larger LS sedan. The teaser image shows the new ES adopting a more aerodynamic profile with a fastback-style roofline that updates its appearance.

      **Design Evolution**

At the front, the ES features a newly redesigned LED headlight arrangement split into two sections, along with an updated version of Lexus’ iconic spindle grille. The back end displays full-width taillights, sculpted shoulders, and faux vents. The updated look is completed with large, multi-spoke alloy wheels that give the sedan a more sophisticated and commanding presence.

This iteration of the ES appears significantly more advanced than the earlier concept from 2021, distancing itself further from its long-standing predecessor. For reference, the current ES has been in production since 2018, received a facelift in 2021, and is slated for a second update in late 2024, specifically for the Chinese market.

      **Electrification and Platform Speculation**

Lexus states that the new ES “refines advanced electrification technologies and aims to enhance the hallmark quietness and ride comfort.” While specific details about the powertrain have not yet been released, earlier trademarks indicate that the lineup may include both hybrid and fully electric models.

Currently, it remains uncertain whether the ES will utilize a new platform or an evolved version of the existing TNGA-K architecture, which is also used in the Toyota Camry.

Besides China, which is arguably the most crucial sedan market, Lexus has confirmed that the updated ES will be available in Europe. However, there has been no official announcement regarding the availability of the updated sedan in the United States.

      **What About The Lexus LS?**

Lexus designating the ES as its new “global flagship” prompts questions about the future of the LS. As the brand’s inaugural production model, the LS has been an essential part of its lineup since 1989, spanning five generations.

The current LS debuted in 2017 and received a facelift in 2020. As it approaches the end of its lifecycle, and without a successor currently announced, there is mounting speculation that Lexus may exit the luxury flagship sedan segment entirely. Although it remains available in Japan, China, and select parts of Europe, the LS was recently withdrawn from the UK market due to disappointing sales.

Lexus has not confirmed the future of the LS. We have reached out to Lexus for clarification and will update this article should we receive a response.
