All vehicles have one common limitation: they can't avoid obstacles. This issue is worsened by numerous haulers who lack proper measurements, as evidenced by another transport vehicle that failed to account for the bridge clearance on Interstate 94 in Detroit. Video footage shared by Metro Detroit News shows a car hauler semi loaded with Cadillac Vistiqs and Lyriqs stuck beneath an interstate overpass. The electric vehicles are still wrapped in factory protective covering—unfortunately, it's not robust enough to withstand contact with steel.
For reasons known only to the driver and/or loader, the taller Vistiqs were placed on top while the shorter Lyriqs were settled underneath. Would this have made a difference? Possibly.
The Cadillac Vistiq stands 71 inches tall, whereas the Lyriq measures 64.3 inches. This presents a height difference of 6.7 inches between the two SUVs, and the underside of the bridge did not completely crush the taller vehicles. It’s also conceivable that the Vistiqs might not have fit under the trailer’s upper deck. There are too many variables to determine for sure.
To be fair, since 1956, the U.S. Department of Transportation has designated the minimum vertical clearance as 14 feet. The overpass on West Warren Avenue, where this incident took place, is only 13 feet and 8 inches high, but it may have been constructed before this height standard was established. Warren Avenue has a history of bridge strikes.
Although there are ongoing highway rehabilitation projects in metro Detroit, like Restore 94 and the I-696 closures, they do not specifically address this area. Other overpasses along this section of I-94 stand at 14 feet and 7 inches, yet they are equally susceptible to inadequate route planning.
Nearby bridges on Livernois and Frontenac Avenues have also seen their share of vehicles wedged under them recently. The latter experienced a significant collision with a gravel hauler just last year.
However, it's clear that raising bridge heights is not an infallible solution. Perhaps even a measuring tape is not sufficient. A recently “catastrophically damaged” overpass in New Mexico serves as evidence of this. At 16 feet and 9 inches tall, the Frontage Road exit on Interstate 10 is capable of clearing most vehicles—except when negligence is involved.
